Michter's To Release 10-Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon For First Time Since 2021

Michter's Distillery will begin releasing its 10-Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon in March 2023, marking the first release of this single-barrel whiskey since 2021. The decision to age the bourbon for an additional year was made by the company's Master Distiller and Master of Maturation, who believe that the extra time has resulted in a memorable and exceptional whiskey. Michter's has a long legacy of offering traditional American whiskeys of uncompromising quality, and its highly acclaimed portfolio includes bourbon, rye, sour mash whiskey, and American whiskey. The Hidden Black History Behind How Whiskey Was Created

Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey, two classic American spirits, have roots in Black history, with evidence showing that Black hands took on much of the work in their production. Nathan “Uncle Nearest” Green, a Black man, was the master distiller who taught Jack Daniel how to make Tennessee whiskey. Although he was not able to start his own distillery, he is recognized as the first master distiller of Jack Daniel's, and his influence is acknowledged in other brands, including Fawn Weaver's Uncle Nearest whiskey brand. Other Black-owned distilleries, like Saint Liberty Whiskey, are also honoring the contributions of Black entrepreneurs to the industry. For the full article, click HERE.

American Whiskey From 170-Year-Old Shipwreck Could Be Worth Millions

In 1854, a ship called The Westmoreland sank in Lake Michigan, carrying 280 barrels of whiskey. For those that had this mead last time, you'll understand why we're so excited to have it back. (And this batch is even better.) For those that haven't, it's a must try. Concocting Maker's Mark Bourbon Is Actually A Really Complicated Process

Courtesy of Maker's Mark website

Nice article that discusses the history and production of bourbon, America's answer to whiskeys and Scotches. All bourbons are whiskeys, but not all whiskeys are bourbons. The rules for bourbon production ensure that the heritage of the spirit stays intact. Maker's Mark, a Kentucky-based bourbon producer, has a process that has remained consistent for over 60 years and is labor-intensive, with nearly every step of the process touched by human hands. The production of bourbon involves several steps, including seasoning, drying, and charring the American oak, fermenting the mash of corn, wheat, and malted barley, and aging the distillate in new American oak charred barrels. Read the full article HERE.

In conclusion, the world of distilled spirits and craft beverages is constantly evolving, with new innovations and trends emerging every year. From Brush Creek Distillery's small-batch, handcrafted bourbons to The Heart Distillery's unique canned cocktails, there's something for everyone to enjoy. The 2023 Craft Beverage Expo promises to bring together the best and brightest in the industry for a weekend of education and inspiration, while Ponyboy Slings RTD and Maker's Mark continue to raise the bar for quality and consistency in the market. As always, we encourage responsible consumption and hope that you'll continue to support these fantastic brands and the people behind them. Cheers!

Bourbon Barrel Blurbs, Volume 02, Issue 04

Hey there, Bourbon lovers! I'm excited to bring you to the latest addition to Bourbon Barrel Blurbs. We have some blurbs about Pinhook Bourbon, BH James Distillery, JK Williams Distillery, Claire Marin and Pollinator Spirits, and bourbon lotteries in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Also looking at Barrel Bourbon, Old Line Spirits. Alpha Brewing Co., Tattersall Distilling, Horse Soldier, Ole Smokey, and Breckenridge Distillery. Hope you enjoy!

Robb Report’s Review of Pinhook Collaboration Series #2

Pinhook Collaboration Series #2

This is a great write-up on the Pinhook Collaboration Series, especially the latest release made in collaboration with Garrett Oliver, the brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewery. The collaboration between the whiskey maker, Sean Josephs, and Oliver, who has extensive experience in beer and spirits, has resulted in a high-quality bourbon with a rich, complex flavor profile. Despite being distilled and aged for only four years, this high-rye bourbon has a palate that belies its young age, with notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla custard, and apple tart leading off on the palate.

It is also great to see that the proceeds from the sales of this bottle will be donated to The Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling, an organization founded by Oliver to award scholarships to people of color who want to pursue brewing and distilling education. This not only helps support a good cause but also acknowledges the difficulties that people of color face in entering the craft brewing industry.

Overall, this Pinhook bourbon is a truly pleasurable high-proof drinking experience that is worth trying and sharing with friends.

BH James Distillery Open

Shawn McCormick has created a distillery, BH James, that is rooted in his family's history and heritage. Named after his great-grandfather Burton James and great-grandmother James Lake, his vodka and bourbon spirits are a tribute to his hometown of Adairville, Kentucky. McCormick's background in food science and his inspiration from the Bourbon Trail motivated him to start his own distillery, and it is now a reality on Gallatin road. Although the still is not yet open for tastings and tours, visitors can still swing by Thursday through Saturday to purchase a bottle or two. For more information, you can visit the website at http://burtonjameswhiskey.com.

Local Distillery Closing Its Doors… For Good?

Courtesy of JK Williams Distillery's Website

It's always sad to see a business close, but the owner of JK Williams Distillery in Peoria is determined to keep the business going, whether that means relocating or finding a new location in central Illinois. With awards for their products, there's no doubt that the distillery has a following and the potential to succeed in the future. Hopefully, they will be able to find a new location that meets their requirements and continue to produce high-quality spirits.

Meet The Queen Bee Of Catskills Spirits

Courtesy of Pollinator Spirits Website

Claire Marin, owner and head distiller of Pollinator Spirits, formerly known as Catskill Provisions, is a woman who is making waves in the male-dominated craft distilling industry. Marin started her journey as a beekeeper in 2003 and soon became enamored with the magical world of bees. She quit her full-time job to pursue beekeeping, eventually launching Catskills Provisions in 2010 to sell honey to chefs in New York City. As the farm distilling movement grew around her, Marin became interested in the art of distilling and eventually opened her own distillery in 2013, launching a line of spirits sourced from local farms in the Catskills and Finger Lakes regions.

Pollinator Spirits offers a range of spirits, including a rye whiskey, finished in honey barrels, two gins, a vodka, a maple bourbon, and a Crimson Amaro. The vodka is described as “expressive” due to the honey used in the fermentation process, while the Beespoke Gin is distilled using wines from the Finger Lakes, giving it a floral kick.

Marin is one of only a few female distillers in the country and is now ready to expand beyond New York, beginning national distribution directly to consumers in March. The rebranding to Pollinator Spirits is not only linked to this expansion but is also meant to bring attention to the importance of pollinators, an issue close to Marin’s heart, as she still has between 175 and 200 hives and is always supporting bees. Barrell Bourbon Batch 034 Released By Barrell Craft Spirits

Barrell Bourbon Batch 034

Barrell Craft Spirits
is known for its blending expertise and for creating unique, aged, cask-strength sourced whiskey and rum. Barrell Bourbon Batch 034 is a blend of whiskey aged for 6, 8, 10, and 15 years. The flavor profile of this bourbon is robust and sophisticated, with distinct tasting notes.

On the nose, it has notes of eggnog and madeleines, dry hard cider, and a range of florals such as elderflower and violet. As it sits, the fruit transitions to a more cooked character, displaying dried apricot, candied orange peel, and mulled cider.

The palate begins with blackcurrant jam and grape soda, followed by classic notes of cinnamon donut, warm cola, orange, umami, and salt. The finish is long and sustained by modest tannin, with notes of shiso, licorice root, and a fudgy peanut butter cup.

A splash of spring water reveals an initially perfumed character with notes of petrichor, jasmine tea, and apple cider vinegar, but when it settles, a deep rancio character comes out, with notes of leafy and nutty flavors.

Old Line Spirits Double Oak Series Sherry Cask

It seems that the demand for Old Line Spirits' annual release has increased significantly since winning an award in Fred Minnick's Ascot Awards last year. The product is a single malt made from 100% malted barley, aged for five years in new American white oak, and then aged for another year in sherry casks. It is bottled at 100 proof and has classic notes of caramel, brown sugar, and tobacco, with additional complexities of stone fruit, nuts, and raisins, according to co-founder Arch Watkins.

The American Single Malt Double Oak Series Sherry Cask Finish will be available in certain states, including Maryland, D.C., Delaware, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Colorado, at a suggested retail price of $64.99 for a 750-ml. bottle.

Tattersall Distilling Launches Interstate American Single Malt Whiskey

Tattersall Distilling has launched its first American single malt whiskey, Interstate Whiskey, which has been aged for four years in virgin oak barrels and distilled from a blend of 100% malted barley, including Wisconsin cherry wood smoked and dark roasted malts. Raise a Glass of Horse Soldier Bourbon

Nice little article from Horse Canada that discusses a group of former Green Berets who developed a brand of bourbon inspired by their time fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. The soldiers became known as the Horse Soldiers because of their use of Afghan horses to navigate the mountainous terrain. After returning home, the soldiers toured distilleries in Kentucky, Ireland, and Scotland to learn about whiskey making, and eventually developed their own brand of bourbon, Horse Soldier Bourbon. The brand is made in Kentucky but has its headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida, where there is a tasting room, restaurant, and event facility called Urban Stillhouse. The brand has won several awards and is available in 16 US states. The article notes that the soldiers' dream is to build more restaurants and a new distillery in Kentucky. The whiskey is bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky, but not billed as Tennessee whiskey. The whiskey has a sweet aroma of peanuts and popcorn, butterscotch and caramel. On the palate, it has a strong corn flavor with a light sprinkle of rye-driven spice and an applesauce finish. The whiskey is considered enjoyable but is priced a bit high for what it offers ($60 SRP). It has a proof of 86 and the bottle is a nice design, with the name "I" embossed on the back and just "bourbon" on the front. Read the full article HERE.

9 Things You Should Know About E.H. Taylor, Jr.

Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. played a significant role in the history of bourbon. His commitment to high-quality spirits revolutionized both production and marketing of bourbon. His life was filled with turmoil, including a career in politics and scandalous business practices, but the quality of his bourbon never wavered. Today, Taylor is honored with his own line of whiskey, E.H. Taylor, Jr., produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery using some of the same practices he introduced. The full line of E.H. Taylor, Jr. whiskey includes 12 varieties, with the flagship being bottled in bond small-batch bourbon, honoring Taylor's role in the Bottled in Bond Act. The demand for E.H. Taylor, Jr. whiskey exceeds the supply, leading to limited availability and high prices. Warehouse C, one of Taylor's original warehouses, is still in use at the Buffalo Trace distillery. After being passed between companies for several decades, the Old Taylor distillery and E.H. Taylor, Jr. brand was finally brought back to Buffalo Trace in 2009. Doc Howard’s Distillery Changes Ownership

Doc Howard's Distillery, located in Perry Township, Lake County, has new owners in the form of Anthony Schimizzi and Ron Johnston. The duo plans to keep the distillery's focus on whiskey, just as the previous owner, Ken Howard, did. Howard established the distillery in 2016 and made seven types of whiskey that are available in liquor stores in Cleveland. Schimizzi and Johnston formed a partnership after Howard suggested they work together due to their complementary skills and shared vision. They are now in charge of the distillery's operations and are learning the recipes for the spice and maple rums, as well as the seven whiskeys. They have also ordered a new still and are working on improving their distilling skills. The tasting room is open on Fridays and Saturdays, and they plan to change the name and create a new label in the future. You can find the full article HERE.

Former NFLers, The Pouncey Twins, Open Tropical Distillers

Courtesy of Tropical Distillers

This seems like a fitting story for Superbowl Sunday. The Pouncey twins (Mike and Maurkice), who are former NFL All-Pros, have opened up a new distillery called Tropical Distillers in Allapattah, Florida. This 8,000-square-foot establishment offers a range of liqueurs, including espresso, mango, lemon-lime, and soon to come, lychee. The brothers aim to create whiskey that they can enjoy rather than spending money on other brands. The whiskey they created honors the teams they have played for, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins. At the distillery, visitors can see the process of bottling, labeling, and aging of the whiskey, as well as the fine details that have been put into the space. Tours of the distillery are available for $25 and include a five-spirit tasting experience, with pick-up locations across Miami. The brothers have also set up a merch store at the distillery, where visitors can purchase merchandise. You can read the full article HERE.

D.C. investigators are working with alcohol agencies in Kentucky, Texas, and Pennsylvania, and have seized numerous bottles of Blanton’s single-barrel bourbon.
