Reviving Black Hawk's Distilling Heritage at Artisans' Point

Photo courtesy of: The Rick Thomas Distillery website
Black Hawk, Colorado, known for its gambling destination, seeks to revive its distilling heritage with the Artisans' Point project. This initiative aims to host ten small-batch distilleries and breweries on Miner's Mesa, a 22-acre piece of land. The Rick Thomas Distillery, focusing on single-malt whiskey, bourbon, rye, and other spirits sourced from Colorado, was the first to start construction in 2021.

The distillery utilizes advanced technology to control temperature, volume, and fermentation in a temperature-controlled grain room. The spirits undergo rigorous testing before release and are distilled in copper stills. Nearly 300 bottles per barrel are produced, and the distillery plans to open a family-friendly tasting room in the future.

The building's design accounts for the windy terrain and future expansion plans include purchasing adjacent land with historical wood structures. The distillery's founder, Declan Watts, studied in Scotland, learning from traditional distillers, and aims to honor Black Hawk's distilling tradition.

Rick Thomas single malt whiskey is expected to hit stores by early 2024, with tastings available at the distillery's new location at 830 Miners Road, Black Hawk, around 2025.

Woodford Reserve Collaborates with the University of Kentucky for Sustainable Rye Sourcing

Renowned bourbon producer Woodford Reserve has partnered with the University of Kentucky and a local trade group to source a locally grown and environmentally sustainable strain of rye for their bourbon production. Currently, a significant portion of Woodford Reserve's rye is sourced from outside Kentucky and even outside the country. The distillery's new initiative aims to build climate resilience and support local agricultural communities by using rye from Kentucky farmers. The five-year pilot program will test 10 varieties of rye, examining their impact on bourbon production. Apart from the economic benefits, using regenerative rye as a cover crop can enhance soil health and sustainability. A successful project will result in a stable, productive rye market closer to home, reducing transportation costs, and benefiting both the land and the regional economy.

Jack Daniel's Introduces Distillery Series Selection #11

Jack Daniel's, renowned for its Old No. 7 Tennessee whiskey, continues to intrigue whiskey enthusiasts with its latest offering: Distillery Series selection #11. This Tennessee whiskey undergoes a unique finishing process in tequila barrels, resulting in a distinctive flavor profile. The Distillery Series releases, available at the distillery and select Tennessee retailers, offer smaller bottles with specialty expressions. The new selection begins with classic Jack whiskey aged in new charred American white oak barrels for at least four years. It is then finished in barrels previously used to mature añejo tequila for one year and seven months, adding distinct flavors to the whiskey. The resulting expression offers a unique twist on Tennessee whiskey, with tasting notes featuring sweet citrus, agave, oak, brown sugar, and dried spices. Bottled at 90 proof and priced at $42, this new release is available at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop and select locations in Tennessee.

Grand Traverse Distillery and Send Brothers Farm's Sustainable Partnership

Grand Traverse Distillery in northern Michigan has formed a beneficial partnership with Send Brothers Farm, a Traverse City area farm, to source all the grains required for making alcohol. The distillery uses corn, wheat, and rye from the farm to produce vodka and whiskey, focusing on incorporating Michigan agriculture into its products. The collaboration began in 2006 when the distillery sought local ingredients and found Send Brothers Farm more than willing to provide their grains for Michigan-made products. After harvesting the wheat and rye, Send Brothers Farm delivers the grains to the distillery, where they are used to produce alcohol. The remaining mash, containing about 16-17% protein, is picked up by local farms, including Moomers Ice Cream. The protein-rich mash benefits the cows, resulting in increased milk production. The cycle continues as the leftover mash is returned to the dairy farm as fertilizer for the farm's operations. This collaboration between three local companies showcases an eco-friendly and sustainable approach, with each party utilizing the by-products of the others in their respective processes.

Bourbon Barrel Blurbs Vol. 01, Ed. 03

Frey Ranch Distillery Releases New Single Barrel Rye Whiskey

FALLON, NV - Given the runaway success of its highly-acclaimed Straight Rye Whiskey, Frey Ranch Distillery announces the release of a limited-edition Single Barrel Rye. Bottled at barrel strength and featuring a mash bill consisting of 100 percent rye, the launch of Frey Ranch Single Barrel Rye keeps pace with current dark spirits trends, as more bourbon consumers add rye to their repertoire of whiskeys. In fact, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS.org), rye whiskey volumes increased 1,275 percent – growing to 1.2 billion cases from 2009 to 2018 – a time when the classic cocktail renaissance began to hit its stride.

Aged in #4 char barrels and capped with #3 char heads, the new Single Barrel Rye has a mash bill of 100% Winter Cereal Rye – all grown and harvested on-site at Frey Ranch Distillery by Colby Frey. The whiskey maintains a smooth, complex flavor that sets it apart from the pepper-forward flavor profile found in many ryes. The nose provides intense, earthy notes of charred applewood, perfume and rye spice while the palate vacillates between candied berries, fig jam, fruit cake, leather, and marzipan. This versatility makes for a flavorful whiskey that can be enjoyed neat, over ice or in classic cocktails, such as a Manhattan, Sazerac or Vieux Carre.

With a suggested retail price of $99.00 for a 750 ml, Frey Ranch Single Barrel Rye will be available in September for the whiskey connoisseur and the whiskey curious consumer via Frey Ranch’s e-commerce site, as well as having a limited retail presence in Nevada this fall.

Rock Star Guitarist John Petrucci Teams Up with Iron Smoke to Launch Rare Specialty Bourbon

Rock the Barrel 2 joins Iron Smoke’s collection of award-winning bourbon whiskeys. In 2018, Iron Smoke was rated a 95.5 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible and in 2019 was listed in Forbes Magazine as one of the “10 Best Bourbons Beyond Kentucky.”

Iowa removes capacity cap on production

Iowa’s Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a bill into law that removes the cap on the amount of alcohol Iowa distilleries may produce. The bill also lets smaller craft distilleries sell up to nine liters of alcohol to customers at their local locations. The larger distilleries have already been allowed to sell that amount to customers for some time.

“The bill does several things to enhance Iowa’s licensing and permitting processes for alcohol distributors. It creates Sunday sales parity for all retail license and alcohol permits and it simplifies the permitting process for non-profit organizations applying for licenses for events,” Reynolds said. “…Finally, the bill – which I love — will help quickly modernize the outdated process for applying for, renewing and paying for licenses.”

Can Punchers Chance Go the D12TANCE?

The business of sourcing and selling whiskey in the U.S. only continues to grow more complex on a yearly basis, with more companies and middlemen occupying the area between “distiller” and “bottler.” Even with sourced brands, the question is often no longer so simple as asking “who sourced this?” Rather, it’s more akin to “Who did they buy this whiskey from, and who did they originally source it from?”

Case in point, we have still-young bourbon brand Puncher’s Chance, a non-distiller-producer (NDP) currently selling two products: A flagship, moderately aged Kentucky bourbon, and a 12-year-old bourbon from Tennessee finished in California Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, labeled The D12TANCE. Both of its products are sourced, but both hail from different sources. And in the case of both, they’re buying whiskey from companies that also didn’t distill the original juice.

Despite launching in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Puncher’s Chance has grown rapidly, and they’ve now appears they've settled on two labels - an affordable classic bourbon and the other an “ultra premium” release. Here is Paste Magazine's review of both releases.

Puncher’s Chance Bourbon

MSRP: $34.99

Mashbill: 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% barley

The flagship bottle of Puncher’s Chance, which evokes rum with its black coloration and squat shape (it reminds me of Diplomatico Exclusiva in particular), is a 45% ABV (90 proof) non-age-stated bourbon, though it’s reportedly between 4 and 6 years old. This was sourced from Kentucky, from an unnamed distillery, but it’s most likely one of the big boys on the block. Puncher’s Chance, meanwhile, is owned by Eugene, Oregon’s Wolf Spirit Distillery, best known for their Blood x Sweat x Tears Vodka. Suffice to say, this spirit has bounced around a few times since leaving the likes of Beam or Heaven Hill, and it may have undergone some of its maturation outside of Kentucky. With a friendly $30 MSRP, though, it fits in pretty well against other sourced, moderately aged bourbons from American NDPs. As I’ve been known to say, there’s always room for more affordable bourbon on the shelf.

On the nose, Puncher’s Chance Bourbon strikes a pretty distinct balance between youth and maturity—I’m getting caramel corn and peanut shells, along with traces of musty oak and brown sugar, with developing rye spice and herbals. On the palate, this drinks very easily indeed, with a somewhat generic but friendly profile of caramel, cinnamon brown sugar, nutmeg, gingerbread, honey-roasted peanuts and slightly sour, tangy oak. It’s lacking an X-factor to make it stand out, perhaps, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with the quality of the bourbon that Puncher’s Chance has sourced. It drinks extremely easily, and could make a good quaffer, though it will also be right at home in classic cocktails where you don’t want to feel the punch of booze all that intensely. A solid Kentucky straight bourbon.

Puncher’s Chance The D12TANCE

MSRP: $128.99

Mashbill: 84% Corn, 8% Malt, 8% Rye

One glance at that MSRP is enough to make it clear that Puncher’s Chance The D12TANCE is being aimed at an entirely different demographic than the accessible, $30, high-value flagship bourbon. This one was unsurprisingly produced in more limited quantities—just 70 barrels of 12-year-old Tennessee bourbon (the mash bill tells us it’s Dickel, though that’s never a surprise), finished in French oak California Cabernet Sauvignon barrels and bottled at a slightly higher 48% ABV (96 proof). That MSRP would perhaps be a bit high if this was simply a 12-year-old selection of Dickel (which tends to be more affordable than most), but the wine barrel finish gives it a novelty that is considerably harder to price.

Interestingly, though, this wasn’t sourced directly from Dickel—rather, the named source is the IJW Whiskey Company of Louisville, KY, a rather fascinating newer company that has been effectively operating in the shadows in recent years, buying whiskey from many sources and then aging it themselves in their own warehouses. IJW will eventually launch an entire product lineup of their own, but in the meantime this is something of a preview of what they’re able to do with sourced spirit from Tennessee, although it’s obviously been influenced afterward by the wine barrel secondary maturation. In this case, this is whiskey from Tennessee, purchased and blended by IJW, and then sold to Wolf Spirit for use in Puncher’s Chance.

On the nose, The D12TANCE started off a little slow for me, but quickly bloomed into something striking with more time in the glass, transforming from caramel corn and cocoa powder to an increasingly rich and spicy profile of clove, cinnamon and chai-like warming spices. The secondary wine barrel finish really seems to have driven some warm, sweet baking spices into the aroma, which is something I quite like.

On the palate, this is also very spicy, with cinnamon and cardamom meeting toasted oak, vanilla and subtle fruit notes of strawberry and cherry. The vinous “wine” character doesn’t show up strongly, but the French oak barrels do make a huge impression via their aromatic spiciness and vanillans. There’s some tannin as well, which leads to a finish that turns more dry, but thankfully doesn’t dry out the palate excessively, as some particularly spice-rich bourbons tend to do. All in all, I really think the French oak character here is lovely—quite expressive, particularly as time goes by, to the point that it might actually be too much for some drinkers. If you enjoy bourbon that is heavy on oak-infused baking spice notes, though, The D12TANCE is quite a delight.
