Milam & Greene Expands Texas Distillery

Milam & Greene Whiskey has completed a multi-million-dollar expansion of its distillery in Blanco, Texas, increasing production to more than 1,000 barrels per year. The expansion included new distilling equipment, a larger distillery footprint, new warehousing facilities, and an updated tasting room. The extension features a new 1,000-gallon Vendome copper pot still, new boilers, fermenters, and mash tuns. Milam & Greene Whiskey also distills whiskey at Kentucky’s Bardstown Bourbon Company using the same mash bill and yeast recipe. For the full article, click here.

KY House Passes Bill To Give Tax Break To Bourbon Industry

The Kentucky House has approved House Bill 5, which gradually lowers property tax for distilleries from 2026 to 2039. Supporters say the tax break is necessary to save jobs in a growing industry, while opponents argue that it could reduce revenue for county services, such as fire departments and sheriff's offices. Failure to provide this tax break may impact the flow of bourbon jobs and infrastructure throughout the state. For the full article, click here.

Pinhook Has Announced The Launch Of The Vertical Series Rye 7 Year

The Pinhook Vertical Series Rye 7 Year is a carefully crafted spirit that has been aged for seven years to achieve its distinct flavor profile. It's interesting that the only factor affecting the aroma and flavor of the spirit is the aging process, given that the mash bill, barrels, and fill dates are all the same across the releases. The blend of 28 barrels and the high proof of 105.12 certainly make it a unique and potentially bold choice for whiskey enthusiasts. The aromas of “caramel, orange zest, cedar, and clove,” followed by flavors of “chocolate, root beer, cardamom, and tobacco” sound like a complex and intriguing combination. It will be exciting to see how this latest release is received by whiskey aficionados. For more information, visit www.pinhookbourbon.com/products.

And there you have it, our roundup of the latest happenings in the bourbon and whiskey world. From exciting new releases to expansions and innovations, the industry continues to grow and evolve. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or a curious newcomer, there's always something new to discover and enjoy. Robb Report’s Review of Pinhook Collaboration Series #2

Pinhook Collaboration Series #2

This is a great write-up on the Pinhook Collaboration Series, especially the latest release made in collaboration with Garrett Oliver, the brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewery. The collaboration between the whiskey maker, Sean Josephs, and Oliver, who has extensive experience in beer and spirits, has resulted in a high-quality bourbon with a rich, complex flavor profile. Despite being distilled and aged for only four years, this high-rye bourbon has a palate that belies its young age, with notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla custard, and apple tart leading off on the palate.

It is also great to see that the proceeds from the sales of this bottle will be donated to The Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling, an organization founded by Oliver to award scholarships to people of color who want to pursue brewing and distilling education. This not only helps support a good cause but also acknowledges the difficulties that people of color face in entering the craft brewing industry.

Overall, this Pinhook bourbon is a truly pleasurable high-proof drinking experience that is worth trying and sharing with friends.

BH James Distillery Open

Shawn McCormick has created a distillery, BH James, that is rooted in his family's history and heritage. Named after his great-grandfather Burton James and great-grandmother James Lake, his vodka and bourbon spirits are a tribute to his hometown of Adairville, Kentucky. McCormick's background in food science and his inspiration from the Bourbon Trail motivated him to start his own distillery, and it is now a reality on Gallatin road. Although the still is not yet open for tastings and tours, visitors can still swing by Thursday through Saturday to purchase a bottle or two. For more information, you can visit the website at http://burtonjameswhiskey.com.

Local Distillery Closing Its Doors… For Good?

Courtesy of JK Williams Distillery's Website

It's always sad to see a business close, but the owner of JK Williams Distillery in Peoria is determined to keep the business going, whether that means relocating or finding a new location in central Illinois. With awards for their products, there's no doubt that the distillery has a following and the potential to succeed in the future. Hopefully, they will be able to find a new location that meets their requirements and continue to produce high-quality spirits.

Meet The Queen Bee Of Catskills Spirits

Courtesy of Pollinator Spirits Website

Claire Marin, owner and head distiller of Pollinator Spirits, formerly known as Catskill Provisions, is a woman who is making waves in the male-dominated craft distilling industry. Marin started her journey as a beekeeper in 2003 and soon became enamored with the magical world of bees. She quit her full-time job to pursue beekeeping, eventually launching Catskills Provisions in 2010 to sell honey to chefs in New York City. As the farm distilling movement grew around her, Marin became interested in the art of distilling and eventually opened her own distillery in 2013, launching a line of spirits sourced from local farms in the Catskills and Finger Lakes regions.

Pollinator Spirits offers a range of spirits, including a rye whiskey, finished in honey barrels, two gins, a vodka, a maple bourbon, and a Crimson Amaro. The vodka is described as “expressive” due to the honey used in the fermentation process, while the Beespoke Gin is distilled using wines from the Finger Lakes, giving it a floral kick.

Marin is one of only a few female distillers in the country and is now ready to expand beyond New York, beginning national distribution directly to consumers in March. The rebranding to Pollinator Spirits is not only linked to this expansion but is also meant to bring attention to the importance of pollinators, an issue close to Marin’s heart, as she still has between 175 and 200 hives and is always supporting bees. Barrell Bourbon Batch 034 Released By Barrell Craft Spirits

Barrell Bourbon Batch 034

Barrell Craft Spirits
is known for its blending expertise and for creating unique, aged, cask-strength sourced whiskey and rum. Barrell Bourbon Batch 034 is a blend of whiskey aged for 6, 8, 10, and 15 years. The flavor profile of this bourbon is robust and sophisticated, with distinct tasting notes.

On the nose, it has notes of eggnog and madeleines, dry hard cider, and a range of florals such as elderflower and violet. As it sits, the fruit transitions to a more cooked character, displaying dried apricot, candied orange peel, and mulled cider.

The palate begins with blackcurrant jam and grape soda, followed by classic notes of cinnamon donut, warm cola, orange, umami, and salt. The finish is long and sustained by modest tannin, with notes of shiso, licorice root, and a fudgy peanut butter cup.

A splash of spring water reveals an initially perfumed character with notes of petrichor, jasmine tea, and apple cider vinegar, but when it settles, a deep rancio character comes out, with notes of leafy and nutty flavors.

For more information, visit The Bourbon Flight, Whiskey Raiders, or Barrell Craft Spirits.

Old Line Spirits Double Oak Series Sherry Cask

Old Line Spirits Double Oak Series Sherry Cask

It seems that the demand for Old Line Spirits' annual release has increased significantly since winning an award in Fred Minnick's Ascot Awards last year. The product is a single malt made from 100% malted barley, aged for five years in new American white oak, and then aged for another year in sherry casks. It is bottled at 100 proof and has classic notes of caramel, brown sugar, and tobacco, with additional complexities of stone fruit, nuts, and raisins, according to co-founder Arch Watkins.

The American Single Malt Double Oak Series Sherry Cask Finish will be available in certain states, including Maryland, D.C., Delaware, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Colorado, at a suggested retail price of $64.99 for a 750-ml. bottle.

Alpha Brewing Co. to Add Distillery

Alpha Brewing Co., based in St. Louis, has announced that it will open a distillery in 2023. The company has been brewing beer since 2013 and currently sells its sour and barrel-aged beers in over 200 locations in St. Louis and nationally.

According to owner and lead brewer Derrick Langeneckert, the Brewstillery will feature a 2,300-square-foot tasting room, a 1,200-square-foot distilling space, and a small kitchen that will serve St. Louis-style pizza and snacks. The distillery will produce three brown spirits (whiskeys, ryes, or bourbons), as well as a new line of fruited vodkas called Squoosch.

Tattersall Distilling Launches Interstate American Single Malt Whiskey

Tattersall Distilling has launched its first American single malt whiskey, Interstate Whiskey, which has been aged for four years in virgin oak barrels and distilled from a blend of 100% malted barley, including Wisconsin cherry wood smoked and dark roasted malts. The result is a complex whiskey with rich notes of chocolate, cherry and a hint of coffee. It is available for purchase in Minnesota and Wisconsin at an MSRP of $45 for a 750ml bottle. The whiskey complies with the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission requirements. Interstate Whiskey is now available for purchase in select retail stores, restaurants and bars across Minnesota and Wisconsin. Please visit www.tattersalldistilling.com for more information.

Raise a Glass of Horse Soldier Bourbon

Nice little article from Horse Canada that discusses a group of former Green Berets who developed a brand of bourbon inspired by their time fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. The soldiers became known as the Horse Soldiers because of their use of Afghan horses to navigate the mountainous terrain. After returning home, the soldiers toured distilleries in Kentucky, Ireland, and Scotland to learn about whiskey making, and eventually developed their own brand of bourbon, Horse Soldier Bourbon. The brand is made in Kentucky but has its headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida, where there is a tasting room, restaurant, and event facility called Urban Stillhouse. The brand has won several awards and is available in 16 US states. The article notes that the soldiers' dream is to build more restaurants and a new distillery in Kentucky. Pinhook 2019 Plans - Vertical Series and Beyond

So earlier this week, after some snooping on the TTB COLA website, I found the labels for some upcoming Pinhook releases. After posting them here on my blog in my regular Caught on COLA - Bourbon feature, I decided to post them on Instagram. When I did, I gambled and asked Pinhook Bourbon Founder and Master Taster Sean Josephs if he would provide any insight into the upcoming releases. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised, no… I was shocked with the response I got. He not only responded but went into some detail. No release dates but… well read below and you will see.
The first label I posted was the Bourbon War which is this year’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey. I finished my post by asking Mr. Josephs if he had any tips on a release date? This was his reply:
"This is the fall bottling of Pinhook’s first release of our Vertical Series. Age statement of 4YO (proofed to 98) and will be released for 9 years, with the age statement increasing by 1 year annually. I will proof each vintage to what I think is the ideal proof. Idea is that you can collect from age 4-12 and follow the barrels as they mature. Doing the same for rye, with the first Vertical Rye coming Spring of 2020. Cheers"
My next post was for Rye Humor and likewise, I finished the post asking Mr. Josephs if there was any info he could share. His reply was:
"I was working on this blend 2 weeks ago at Castle & Key. Our first cask strength rye release. MGP barrels that will be a little shy of 4YO. Proof won’t be known until we dump, but guessing in the 115 range. Total production for the country is 65 barrels. For whatever it’s worth, coming from my biased perspective, it is ridiculously good"
Now I am sure his perspective is biased but I am also sure that the rye is really, really, REALLY good as well. The concept of the Vertical Series has me extremely intrigued and I really hope I can get in on them. I’ll do my best to track them down and will even try to review them but coming across them is not always easy for me. Unfortunately, I am not in the circles that people like Mr. Minnick and others are where they are all but guaranteed access to some of these releases. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for them, I’m just saying that I will struggle to get the Vertical Series and bring my thoughts on it to you.

Hmmm… I have apparently gone off rambling. I’m sorry. Well, that’s it for now. I hope you enjoyed this little bit of insight into this year’s Pinhook releases. If you have any additional information or thoughts, please let me know in the comments.  And thanks again to Sean Joseph.

Caught on COLA - Bourbon

I'm back with the next edition of Caught on COLA - Bourbon where I delve into the TTB COLA registry and try to snoop out what the distilleries are cooking up and getting ready to release. So without further adieu, let's get to snooping!
Every year, Pinhook Bourbon releases a new bourbon (and rye), each connected to an active, promising young thoroughbred. This year's bourbon will be dedicated to bay colt named Bourbon War who stands 16.0 hands. The juice in the bottle is aged for four years (age stated on the bottle) and tips the scale at 116.5 proof (58.25% Alc./Vol.).
As far as Pinhook's rye release, it seems it will be named for another bay colt named Rye Humor that stands at 16.1 hands. The rye in this release is bottled at cask strength and is also 116.5 proof (58.25% Alc./Vol.). Both the bourbon and rye releases' labels are interactive and feature augmented reality (AR) by scanning the bottle with the Pinhook AR app. Of course, there is no mention yet on a release date but make sure to grab a bottle of both releases as Pinhook, in my opinion, is damn good.
From the City of Brotherly Love comes Four Humours Bourbon Whiskey. This MGP-sourced juice is aged for four years and comes in at 90 proof (45% Alc./Vol/.). This bourbon release joins their rye in what looks like will be a decent spirit menu. They have plans for a five year bourbon, a wheated bourbon, a corn whiskey and a malted mash whiskey. You can find out more on their website.
Next we have M & O Spirits with their Black Bourbon Whiskey which they say is triple distilled and double oaked. Made from corn, rye, red wheat and malted barley, this whiskey hits the bottle at 90 proof (45% Alc./Vol/.) and is distilled, aged and bottled in Asheville, Ohio. You could check out their website for more information but unfortunately it's just a splash page.
Texas' own Rio Brazos Distillery is set to release a Single Barrel expression of their Texas bourbon. This young bourbon (aged for one year) is bottled at 100 proof (50% Alc./Vol.) and joins their lineup of Texas whiskey and corn whiskey. As of yet, there is no mention on their website but stay tuned.
Hailing from my home state of Michigan, Motor City Gas is coming out with their Belly Up Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Distilled and bottled in Royal Oak, Michigan, Belly Up tips the scales at 92 proof (46% Alc./Vol.) is "aged more than 2 years." You can subscribe to their email list for updates on their website which is another one that isn't much more than a splash page for now.
Oregon Ryegrass Spirits (aka Spiritopia) is adding to their rye whiskey and brandy portfolio by bringing us Rainbow Straight Bourbon Whiskey. According to the back label, Rainbow is made from 51% corn and 49% wheat (all from Eastern Oregon) and is bottled at 90 proof (45% Alc./Vol.). No mention on the Spiritopia website as of yet but I'll keep checking since I love wheaters.
PM Spirits looks like they are about to release another edition of their Mic Dop Straight Bourbon Whiskey. L19-01 is a MGP sourced bourbon that has been aged for four years. The mashbill consists of 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% barley malt and is bottled at a 111 proof (55.5% Alc./Vol.). No mention yet on a release date and no information on their website yet about this release.
Vapor Distillery's Boulder Spirits looks like they are adding a two-year Straight Bourbon Whiskey to their lineup which already includes bourbon, single-malt whiskey, gin and vodka. This Scottish copper pot still juice is made from 51% corn, 44% malted barley and 5% rye that was aged in No. 3 char white oak barrels and was bottled at 84 proof (42% Alc./Vol.). Vapor Distillery doesn't show the release on their website so there is no information on a possible release date. Make sure to follow them on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook for all the latest information.
Get ready for the Remus Repeal Reserve 2019 Medley from MGP's own G. Remus Distilling Co. This 100 proof (50% Alc./Vol.) release is comprised of 12% 2007 Bourbon (21% Rye), 78% 2008 Bourbon (21% Rye) and 10% 2008 Bourbon (36% Rye). There isn't any mention on the Remus website about the Limited Edition release but it will probably come out towards the end of the year to celebrate Repeal Day (Dec. 3rd). If it is anything like first two releases, grab it if you can!

That's all I have for this week. Please make sure to check back as I do some more COLA snooping and see what we have to look forward to in our bourbon future. Until then, drink more bourbon! Cheers!
