Thomas Ashbourne Craft Cocktails Now Available At Kroger Stores Nationwide

Thomas Ashbourne Craft Spirits, a female-led craft cocktail company, has expanded its retail presence to around 800 Kroger Family Companies nationwide. The company will offer two of its five ready-to-sip libations, The Perfect Cosmo by SJP, created by actress Sarah Jessica Parker, and The Classic Old Fashioned, both made with fresh, all-natural ingredients. The Perfect Cosmo by SJP is made with vodka and triple sec, with aromas of lime, sweet cranberries, and hints of strawberries. The Classic Old Fashioned features premium bourbon whiskey with hints of sweet maplewood, caramel, and notes of bright orange bitters. The cocktails are kosher, certified gluten-free, and have a spirit base ranging from 12-25% ABV.

THSO Presents Bourbon & Blues On Aug. 25

The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and Labor Link are partnering to host Bourbon & Blues at the Hulman Center on Aug. 25. VIP tickets are $75 for tasting and $55 for non-alcoholic, while general admission tickets are $55 for regular and $30 for non-alcoholic. The event will feature bourbon tastings, music by the Men of Note Jazz Band, appetizers, a cash bar, a silent auction, dancing, and proceeds benefit the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. Vendors include Pernod Ricard, Brown-Forman, Twenty 20, Hust Culinary, Luxco/MGP, Big Machine, Log Still, and Mark Anthony Brands. Mythology Distillery Moves From Denver To Steamboat Springs

Mythology Distillery, originally inspired by a ski trip in Alaska, opened in LoHi in 2018 and recently moved to Steamboat Springs on a 1.5-acre campus. The location features a distillery, a restaurant called the Confluence offering Chinese soup dumplings and noodle dishes, and a full bar serving craft beer, boutique wines, and cocktails. The outdoor Whiskey Garden includes a large central fire pit, an additional bar, seating, live music, and even a pair of slides. The distillery also has a 5,000-square-foot rackhouse for aging spirits, designed to follow the natural climate of Steamboat. Sustainability is a focus for Mythology, with waste recycling, water conservation measures, and solar power. In the future, they plan to explore available spaces in Denver and open a small cocktail bar. By the end of July, a free shuttle service will be available for pick-ups from the Steamboat Resort transit center and downtown. Ross & Squibb Distillery Partners With The Chris Long Foundation’s Waterboys Initiative

Ross & Squibb Distillery, in partnership with NFL legend Chris Long's Foundation's Waterboys Initiative, is working to provide clean and safe water to the community of Oloile in southern Kenya. The distillery, which has benefited from the clean water of the Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer since 1847, wants to express gratitude by helping bring clean water and opportunities to the community. The project involves the construction of a deep borehole well, elevated water storage, and a distribution system. Yellowstone Limited Edition 2023 Heads To Retail

Limestone Branch Distillery's Master Distiller, Steve Beam, has announced the release of the 2023 Yellowstone Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This bourbon is a blend of 7-year, 13-year, and 16-year aged bourbons finished in Tokaji casks, bottled at 101 proof. Eric Legrand Teams Up With Rutgers University To Bring His Distinctive Whiskey To Home Games.

Rutgers University has entered into a multiyear partnership with Eric LeGrand Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, marking the university's first collaboration with a spirits company. Eric LeGrand, a former Rutgers defensive tackle who was paralyzed during a game in 2010, co-founded the whiskey brand along with spirits entrepreneur Brian Axelrod. The partnership allows the whiskey to be featured in select hospitality areas at SHI Stadium and Jersey Mike's Arena during Rutgers football games. The whiskey, which launched in March 2023, is distilled in Owensboro, Kentucky, and bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky. Each bottle retails for $44.99, and $5.20 from every case sold is donated to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. Eric LeGrand is known as an ambassador for Rutgers Athletics and continues to inspire through his philanthropic efforts. First Distillery In Surf City, NC

Andy and Amy Szwejbka are set to open Hidden Ships, Pender County's first distillery, in Triton Village in Surf City in September 2023. The distillery will produce gin, white rum, and vodka, while tequila and bourbon will be sourced initially. However, the distillery will lay down its first barrel of bourbon as soon as the permit is approved, which will take years before the first batch comes to market. Hidden Ships will have a production facility, a tasting room, and a bar, and will be focused on pre-Prohibition cocktails. The distillery's gin will have a juniper flavor with a botanical recipe that includes other flavors such as dogwood flower for Carolina flair. The 2,700-square-foot distillery will have a 20-foot bar as its centerpiece, with a speakeasy lounge area and indoor and outdoor seating for up to 70 people. The couple started a Kickstarter campaign with a $25,000 goal to fund the purchase of a chiller that could double Hidden Ships' production capacity, which will not stop the distillery from opening if the goal is not met. Bourbon continues to be a popular spirit among whiskey enthusiasts, and new brands are constantly appearing in the market. Here are five new bourbon brands to try, all of which source their whiskey from reputable distilleries, but each with their unique features. Hand Barrel bourbon, distilled by Bardstown Bourbon Company, has a high-rye mashbill and comes in black and white bottles. High N’ Wicked Kentucky Straight Bourbon is produced using the sweet mash method, has a high rye content, and is aged for at least five years. Puncher’s Chance Bourbon is a limited-edition release made from a blend of five- to six-year-old bourbon and is finished in a rum cask. Bluebird Distilling And Country Musician Jordan Davis Release Limited Edition Whiskey

A Chester County, Pennsylvania distillery, Bluebird Distilling, is expanding its distribution to 41 states following the success of its limited edition Bluebird Days Straight American Whiskey, created in partnership with country musician Jordan Davis. Founder Jared Adkins expects the move to increase sales by up to 20% and plans to add more products as national sales grow. The distillery, which already sells 14 products in over 250 stores across Pennsylvania, also plans to launch an e-commerce site for the coffee products from Char & Stave, its sister cafe and cocktail bar concept. Eric LeGrand Creates New Bourbon Brand To Help Support Those Who Are Paralyzed

Eric LeGrand, former Rutgers University football player, author, sports analyst, business owner, and advocate for those with paralysis, has launched Eric LeGrand Kentucky Straight Bourbon. LeGrand, who sustained a spinal cord injury in 2010, has fought against his own prognosis to regain movement in his shoulders. Woodford Reserve And Kentucky Derby Museum Are Dropping An Ultra-Limited Bourbon

It seems that the Kentucky Derby season is in full swing, with special bourbon releases coming out leading up to the main event on May 6. The latest is two batches of special Woodford Reserve bourbon, which is available exclusively from the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Secretariat Bourbon Box Set was released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Secretariat winning the Triple Crown. There are only 400 box sets available, and while they will go on sale to the public in the coming weeks, there’s still time to enter the lottery to win a chance to purchase one of two box sets, each numbered #73 to celebrate Secretariat’s victory year. Uncle Nearest Takes Top Honors At 2023 Los Angeles Invitational Wine & Spirits Challenge

The Los Angeles Invitational Wine & Spirits Challenge is an annual competition that aims to highlight the best wine and spirits producers in the world and introduce those producers to the largest market of consumers in the United States. The judging for the competition took place on February 21-22, 2023, and attracted close to 1,100 entries.

The Best of the Best winners were a Pinot Noir from Russian River Vineyards (Sonoma County, Calif.) and a Rye Whiskey from Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey (Shelbyville, Tenn.). The Russian River Vineyards’ 2018 Austin Vineyard Pinot Noir was described as "Age worthy," "complex," "very round with great acidity," "full-bodied" and "savory" and earned 99 points and a Double Gold rating. The Uncle Nearest Uncut and Unfiltered Straight Rye Whiskey was described as having "leathery," "earthy," and "Moose Lodge-class old-style rye" characteristics, and was awarded Best of the Best honors in the spirits sweepstakes entries. New York’s Cooper's Daughter Spirits Blending Old Techniques, New Flavors

Cooper's Daughter Spirits is a distillery and cooperage in Claverack, New York. It was founded in 2015 by Stuart and Sophie Newsome and produces a wide range of spirits, including bourbon, whiskey, vodka, and liqueurs. The distillery's buildings are located on a 1.5-acre property, which came with a restored farmhouse and two other buildings. One of the buildings was renovated by Stuart to serve as a distillery and cooperage, while the other building, built in 1790, was refurbished and is now used as a rickhouse for aging bourbon and an indoor café. The property was originally part of the Jacob Rutsen Van Rensselaer House and Mill complex, and the current owners also own a 50-year-old apple orchard in Red Hook. Cooper's Daughter plans to use its own apples to make vodka in the coming years. The grains, fruits, botanicals, and tree syrups used to flavor their seasonal spirits are either grown on their own property or procured from nearby farms. The Cocktail Garden is an outdoor space where people can enjoy a drink and has several outdoor spaces, including a wood-framed tent and a blazing steel fire pit. Ponyboy Slings is a Louisville-based, ready-to-drink carbonated bourbon cocktail that will soon be available in a can. Founded by Mike and Janell Bass, the cocktails feature a young, unbranded bourbon and sweet wine like sherry or vermouth, along with bitters and carbonation. Concocting Maker's Mark Bourbon Is Actually A Really Complicated Process

Nice article that discusses the history and production of bourbon, America's answer to whiskeys and Scotches. All bourbons are whiskeys, but not all whiskeys are bourbons. The rules for bourbon production ensure that the heritage of the spirit stays intact. Maker's Mark, a Kentucky-based bourbon producer, has a process that has remained consistent for over 60 years and is labor-intensive, with nearly every step of the process touched by human hands. The production of bourbon involves several steps, including seasoning, drying, and charring the American oak, fermenting the mash of corn, wheat, and malted barley, and aging the distillate in new American oak charred barrels. Bluegrass Distillers Breaks Ground on Major Expansion

Bluegrass Distillers, a craft spirits distillery based in Lexington, KY, is building a new distillery in Midway, KY at Elkwood Farm. The $8 million investment will include a 36” column still, six 18,000-gallon fermentation tanks, offices, labs, tasting and event space, and a bottling line. The facility will have a production capacity increase of over 100 times to meet the demand for its award-winning bourbons. The former primary residence at Elkwood Farm will serve as a visitor center, gift shop, and cocktail lounge. The distillery will also be growing grains for its bourbon on the property. Bluegrass is celebrating this milestone by releasing Elkwood Reserve, a 9-year single-barrel bourbon whiskey, which will be available at their Lexington gift shop. The distillery is set to open in Fall 2023 and will offer a grain-to-glass experience for visitors. Heaven Hill’s Latest Limited Release Will Have Bourbon Nerds Clamoring for Corn Whiskey

Heaven Hill is releasing a 20-year-old corn whiskey as part of its Heritage Collection. This is the second release in the collection, which highlights one of the distillery's six mashbills. The whiskey is 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye and was distilled in 2002 and aged in used bourbon barrels. The whiskey is bottled at 115 proof and comes with a special box and information about the mashbill, warehouse location, and production date. The bottle launches on March 1 with an SRP of $289.99, but the 2022 release is already selling for almost $1,700. For the full story, click here.

Horse Neck Kentucky Bourbon RTDs Launch in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana

Firsty Thursday, LLC has launched its new beverage brand "Horse Neck" which features a premium ready-to-drink (RTD) spirit-based canned cocktail made with Kentucky Straight Bourbon in four unique flavors: Bourbon Ginger Ale, Bourbon Cherry Rye, Bourbon La Paloma, and Bourbon Mule Spice. The drinks are made with real juice, natural ingredients, and have 9% ABV. The brand will begin distribution in Texas in late February and will expand to additional states later in the year with a focus on Arkansas, California, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Woodford Reserve Names Elizabeth McCall Master Distiller

Elizabeth McCall has been named as the third Master Distiller in the 26-year history of the bourbon brand Woodford Reserve. She will oversee quality and innovation and bring new products to market. McCall has been training for this role for over a decade and has been a part of the Woodford Reserve's parent company, Brown-Forman, since 2009. Chris Morris, the previous Master Distiller, will assume the role of Master Distiller Emeritus. Breckenridge Distillery Celebrates Valentine’s Day with Third Edition of Sexy Motor Oil Whiskey

Breckenridge Distillery and Breckenridge Brewery have announced the release of their limited edition Sexy Motor Oil whiskey aged in beer barrels for 10-13 months. This year's edition of Sexy Motor Oil will have tropical banana and apple flavors over a layer of dark chocolate, caramel, and honey, and will be available at Breckenridge Distillery and Tasting Room in Breckenridge, Colorado starting February 10, 2023. Want to Drink Barrel Proof Wheat Whiskey? Heaven Hill’s New Bernheim Is Here to Help

Heaven Hill distillery has announced a new barrel-proof version of its Bernheim straight wheat whiskey, which is made from 51% winter wheat, 37% corn, and 12% malted barley. It is aged between 7 and 9 years and bottled at 118.8 proof. The whiskey will be released in two batches per year and will have a starting price of $64.99. It is a less common type of whiskey compared to bourbon or rye and only a few distilleries have a straight wheat whiskey in their lineup. This is not Heaven Hill's first attempt at barrel-proof wheat whiskey as they released two batches of the limited-edition Parker's Heritage Collection in 2014. Read the full article HERE.

 

Fawn Weaver's Premium Whiskey Brand Honors the Legacy of Uncle Nearest, the Enslaved Man Who Pioneered Tennessee Whiskey

Fawn Weaver started Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey in 2017 after learning about the story of Nearest Green, a formerly enslaved Black man who was a master distiller and whiskey trailblazer in the 1850s. Nearest taught Jack Daniel the process of distilling Tennessee whiskey, but his work was uncredited until recently. Weaver brought together 20 historians and experts to research Nearest's story and gathered thousands of original documents and artifacts. She interviewed nearly 100 descendants of Nearest and Jack Daniel and found that the best way to honor Nearest was by making whiskey.

Weaver has an all-women leadership team and a 50 percent women-employed company. Victoria Eady Butler, a fifth generation descendant of Nearest, is the master blender and has been named Master Blender of the Year four times. Weaver aims to make Uncle Nearest the seventh spirit conglomerate and pass down a legacy of excellence for women and people of color leaders to follow. 13th Annual New York International Spirits Competition Winners Announced

Recently, the 2022 New York International Spirits Competition (NYISC) took place virtually in New York City. The 13th annual competition had over 1400+ submissions from 39 international countries and 34 states in the USA.

Judging was conducted by panels of a minimum of four qualified trade buyers. They were a mix of restaurateurs, sommeliers, retail spirits buyers, distributors and importers. The judging took place at the beautiful 3 West Club in the heart of New York City, across the street from Rockefeller Center.

The New York International Spirits Competition medals are awarded on a merit basis by a majority vote. The judges were instructed to grant no awards or medals when, in their opinion, the spirits are not ones they would import, distribute, buy or sell in their businesses based on product and price category.

Judges were asked to evaluate the spirits in silence until all panel members had finished their evaluation and then open a discussion to reach a consensus. Judge votes were recorded by a NYISC staff moderator.

If there was a significant difference among the judges’ votes, panelists were encouraged to reach a consensus and, if needed, seek counsel from the Head Judge Adam Levy.

Award levels were Double Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

• Double Gold: Phenomenal Product (Must Be Unanimous Decision by Panelists) 
• Gold: Buyers “Love” It
• Silver: Buyers “Like” It 
• Bronze: Buyers would purchase it

Double Gold award winners were re-tasted by all panelists to establish which brands may be eligible to receive a ‘Best of Category’ endorsement in its pricing category.
