Bourbon Barrel Blurbs, Volume 02, Issue 19

In the ever-evolving world of whiskey, there is no shortage of exciting developments and innovations. Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, the most-awarded Bourbon and American Whiskey of recent years, is launching its highly sought-after Single Barrel Whiskey. They are conducting an online public vote called 'Single Barrel Showdown: America's Choice' to determine the first five states to receive the product in stores. The voting period runs until August 2nd, coinciding with the sixth anniversary of the brand's launch. Participants have a chance to win a trip to Tennessee. The winning states will receive the Single Barrel Whiskey first, just in time for September 5th. The whiskey has received numerous accolades and is hand-selected by hand-selected by Victoria Eady Butler, a four-time Master Blender of the Year, and the great-great-granddaughter of Nearest Green. It goes through a triple filtration process and is priced at $89.99.

Nelson's Green Brier Distillery has opened a new distillery restaurant in Marathon Village. The restaurant offers gourmet distillery-inspired cuisine with a refined twist on comfort food, reflecting Southern flavors and local influences. Spirit Hound Distillers is expanding in Colorado with the opening of a new tasting room in Denver's Highlands neighborhood. The address is 3622 Tejon Street, and visitors can enjoy craft cocktails made with special-release liquors, live music, trivia, and mixology nights. The venue will also feature a dog-friendly patio and a food menu with 'small nibblers'. Abby Robertson, Chief Commercialization Officer, expressed excitement about the opening, and CEO Brad Stevenson mentioned more future plans. The original tasting room in Lyons will continue to operate, and the Denver Tasting Room will have its grand opening celebration on August 4th.

15 STARS is expanding its fine-aged bourbon whiskey portfolio with the limited release of its award-winning Platinum expression. This 98-proof blend of straight bourbon whiskeys aged 18, 15, and 10 years pays homage to America's "First West" and is available in select retailers in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Missouri, Georgia, and Louisiana, as well as online through 15STARS.com. Shiner Bock beer, a well-known Texas icon, has expanded its offerings with a new distillery, K. Spoetzl Distilling Company. Head of Distilling Operations, Jessica Michalec, led the venture, inspired by the region's history of distilling during Prohibition. The distillery features a copper pot still and two rectifying columns from a Scottish still maker. All spirits start as Shiner beer, infusing the brewery's character into each batch. The vodka is distilled twice and passes through both columns, resulting in a smooth 190-proof spirit with sweet grain and vanilla notes. The London Dry-style gin undergoes a second distillation with botanicals like juniper and grapefruit peels. Shiner Shine, an unaged whiskey, is grain-forward and will be released as bourbon after maturing in oak barrels. The distillery plans to release more spirits, including rye whiskey and Scotch-style single malt. Shiner's spirits are currently available exclusively at their distillery in Shiner, Texas. Visitors can take a tour and enjoy cocktails on tap at the tasting room.

Manassas native, Pete Evick, music director for the Bret Michaels Band and author, has collaborated with Manassas craft distiller KO Distilling to release Bare Knuckle Evick Edition Bourbon. The bourbon is hand-crafted from 70% corn, 20% wheat, and 10% malted barley sourced from local Virginia farms and aged in charred new American Oak barrels from Kentucky. Bottled at 98 proof to represent the year Pete signed his first record deal and filled during his birth month of August, the bourbon holds personal significance. Pete signed all the bottles sold during the release at KO Distilling, where fans and family celebrated the Single Barrel bourbon featuring an image of Pete playing his guitar on the label. The Bare Knuckle Evick Edition Bourbon is priced at $62.99 for a 750mL bottle and will be available initially at the Distillery Store with shipping options for Virginia residents. Future Evick Edition Barrel Select bottles will be sold online for bourbon enthusiasts across the nation.

Ross & Squibb Distillery from Lawrenceburg, Indiana, has introduced Remus Highest Rye Straight Bourbon Whiskey as the latest extension of its Remus Bourbon brand family. Priced at $54.99 per 750ml bottle, this new offering is a permanent year-round line extension. Remus Highest Rye Bourbon is aged for six years and comes at 109 proof, featuring a mash bill with 51% corn, 39% rye, and 10% malted rye to emphasize the rye profile. The bourbon delivers a sweet and rich fruit aroma with maple notes and a palate that offers robust candied-fruit flavors, followed by a lingering finish with hints of spicy cinnamon and saddle leather. Ross & Squibb Distillery, formerly known as MGP, pays tribute to its rye tradition through this high-rye bourbon.

New Riff Distilling is introducing its Sour Mash Single Malt project, an innovative exploration of malted barley combined with the sour mash Kentucky whiskey-making process. The distillery began producing malt whiskey in 2014, and the first batch is set to debut in the fall. Inspired by Celtic tradition and Head Distiller Brian Sprance's brewing experience, the project aims to create a unique whiskey showcasing various malted barley varieties. New Riff has developed six different malt whiskey mashbills, including Golden Promise, Maris Otter, Chevallier Heirloom, peated Scottish barley, and two beer-inspired mashbills based on classic Barleywine and Belgian Quadrupel recipes. These whiskeys have matured in diverse barrels, such as new charred oak, red wine casks, and classic sherried oak casks. The core offering, a blend of five recipes, will be released in the fall of 2023 at cask strength and without chill filtration.

15 Stars Fine Aged Bourbon, released by a father and son team working with Bardstown Bourbon Co., won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Awards and won Double Platinum from the ASCOT Awards created by Louisville-based spirits critic Fred Minnick.

Their first limited-release bourbon, 15 Stars 14 Year Old Timeless Reserve, was a finalist for best straight bourbon at San Francisco, according to Rick Johnson, who started the company with his son, Ricky, three years ago.

Their first bourbon is in stores only in Kentucky, in very limited release of only 1,650, with a suggested retail price of $279 a bottle. It’s 103 proof with a nose of butterscotch and maple, a palate of dark chocolate and molasses and a finish of dark chocolate, oak and coffee, according to the tasting notes.

The next release, called 15 Stars 7&15, blends two bourbons of those ages and will be available in late July in stores in Kentucky including Liquor Barn and Total Wine & More. That bourbon also was awarded Double Platinum in the 2022 ASCOT Awards. It will have a suggested retail price of $139 a bottle. It is 107 proof with a nose of cinnamon, rose petals and apricot, a palate of citrus and spice and soft toasted oak finish.

Spirits and art highlighted at new distillery

Distillery of Modern Art - the name says it all.

The newest entry to metro Atlanta’s craft libation scene is also a modern art gallery.

The venue officially opened June 16. It’s been under construction for 19 months—delayed in part by the pandemic. The former sign manufacturing site in a nondescript corner of Chamblee has been transformed into an open, airy, trendy space where seven liquors (vodka, peach vodka, gin, corn whiskey, rye whiskey, bourbon and amaro peach) are produced.

Whiskey Wednesday: Take a Hike With Five Trail Whiskey

This week, we try a new blended whiskey from ... Coors?

Now, Molson Coors has made the leap to the spirits side of the business with the venerable beer company’s first whiskey, Five Trail Blended American Whiskey. Retailing at around $60 a bottle, this whiskey lives squarely in the premium price point, so it had better be something special, right? Well, aside from the novelty of being Coors’ first whiskey, it really is a pretty unique blended whiskey.

The blend is listed as 45 percent wheated bourbon from Indiana, 35 percent four-grain bourbon from Kentucky, 15 percent Colorado single malt, and 5 percent 13-year-old bourbon from Kentucky. The Colorado component was distilled using the same barley that Coors uses in its beers, so that’s one local stamp on the product. Another Colorado touch is when the four whiskeys are de-barreled and blended in Kentucky, Colorado river water is used to dilute the final product down to 95 proof.

The result is definitely a nice whiskey, exhibiting the sweeter corn/vanilla/caramel elements of the bourbon components and the complexity of the older Kentucky bourbon. But the single malt from Coors barley adds a lovely grain element to make the blend more interesting.

Old Forester's Next Release in the 117 Series: Whiskey Row Fire

The limited-edition release marks the 7^th anniversary of the fire on Whiskey Row and commemorates the bravery of the Louisville Fire Department

LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Old Forester Distilling Co. announces the release of the newest installment of The 117 Series – Whiskey Row Fire.

This commemorative bottle honors the 7th anniversary of the fire on Whiskey Row that nearly destroyed the historic block.

"I remember that day and that fire vividly," Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick said. "We are extremely proud of our brave firefighters who risked their lives and saved the block."

On July 7, 2015, a four-alarm fire ravaged the buildings on historic Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville. Teams of brave Louisville first responders were able to contain and extinguish the catastrophe, preserving the site for the Old Forester Distillery at 117/119 West Main. The block is now home to restaurants, bars, a hotel and other businesses – and has become a tourist destination.

In 2020, men and women of Louisville Fire, many of whom fought the blaze, selected eight single barrels from a lot filled the same day they extinguished the fire. All 8 barrels sold out in two days and proceeds were donated to the Louisville Firefighter Disaster Fund.

The remainder of the barrels filled that day slumbered an additional two years in the warehouse and are now batched together to create the 117 Series - Fireman Barrels.

At nearly 7 years old - these barrels are fully mature and wise in character.

Today, Frederick and Louisville Fire Department members were special guests of Old Forester and toured the distillery. In addition, Old Forester is making a charity donation to the Louisville Fire Department to help firefighters who are in distress.

New Distillery in Berlin Aims For September Opening

While work is still underway, connections of a new distillery in Berlin, Maryland are hopeful it will be open in September.

Forgotten 50 Distilling, located on Old Ocean City Boulevard in Berlin, received its Class 1 distilling license last week and continues to move closer toward opening. The extensive renovations required for the building, and the decision to serve food as well as drinks, have kept the distillery’s connections busy for the past year.

Review: American Highway Reserve Route 1 and Route 2

Country music star Brad Paisley, in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Co., aged his American Highway Reserve Bourbon in barrels stored inside a 53-foot semi-trailer, dubbed the “rolling rickhouse” that followed his 2019 tour across the US of A for more than 7,000 miles. The first release, dubbed Route 1, was a blend of sourced Kentucky high-rye bourbons aged 3 to 15 years. The latest release, Route 2, followed Brad’s 2021 tour which traveled even more miles and includes 4- and 12-year old Kentucky stocks, as well as a majority share of bourbon distilled in Georgia(!).
