Marianne Eaves Debuts Forbidden & James B. Beam Distilling Co. Introduces An American Single Malt Whiskey

Forbidden Bourbon by Master Distiller Marianne Eaves

Marianne Eaves, Kentucky's first female Master Distiller, has introduced Forbidden, the spirits industry's first white corn and white winter wheat expression of Kentucky bourbon. The bourbon is the result of nearly a decade of work by Eaves, who aimed to capture the essence of an elegant mature bourbon through nontraditional low-temperature fermentation. Forbidden Bourbon breaks new ground by using unconventional ingredients and techniques. The initial release is a small batch of 5-year-old bourbon with a sweet and smooth profile, featuring flavors of vanilla, caramel, citrus, and oak spice. It will be available in select states and online at a SRP of $129. The first release will include a highly allocated number of hand-blended bottles along with three single barrel cask strength expressions. Learn more at DrinkForbidden.com.

Noe defined the guidelines for this emerging category, emphasizing the unique flavor of American malted barley. The whiskey showcases warm toffee sweetness and a bready taste. Clermont SteepTM marks a significant step for James B. Beam Distilling Co. as it explores this growing segment. The whiskey will be available in select states starting June 2023. Learn more HERE.

[Press Release] Historic Bourbon Brand, Fortuna, to Re-Enter the American Whiskey Market

Image from Fortuna Bourbon's website

STANFORD, Ky., Sept. 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Historic whiskey brand Fortuna Bourbon is set to re-enter the market for the first time in over 50 years.

Operating from the late 1800's until the mid 1960's, Fortuna was once a prolific and known brand throughout America. After shuttering their doors during the dark days of whiskey, the brand is now being revitalized for a new generation of whiskey lovers.

Fortuna is being revived by the people behind Rare Character, an emergent brand founded in 2021 by industry veterans Pablo Moix and Peter Nevenglosky. Joining them in 2022 is Andy Shapira, an industry expert who gained invaluable experience and insight while working and growing up in his family's three-generation legacy business Heaven Hill Distilleries.

Fortuna was originally founded by Phil Hollenbach, a German immigrant, in the late 1800's. Hollenbach found success in Kentucky by bringing "A Taste of Good Fortune" to all with his remarkable bourbon.

Through extensive research including correspondence with members of the Hollenbach family, this iteration of the brand aims to recreate the essence of Fortuna at its peak in the 1880s, down to the branding, bottles, and bourbon itself.

"We were fortunate to have had access to a few vintage bottlings of Fortuna, as well as the Hollenbach's original flagship brand Glencoe," said Shapira. "This helped produce a flavor profile to shoot for and shape the way we approach meticulously selecting the six barrels that make up each batch of Fortuna. We are proud of the results."

The whiskey is a blended Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 102 proof, aged a minimum of 6 years. "It's so perfectly balanced it's crushable," explained co-founder Pablo Moix. "I come from a bar background, so I just approached it the same way I would do cocktails."

Moix, Nevenglosky, and Shapira are no strangers to whiskey; they're responsible for Rare Character Whiskey, one of the fastest growing whiskey brands in America. Through exclusive single barrel releases and innovative product lines such as The Finishing Series and The Native Wood Series, Rare Character has quickly become known in whiskey communities.

Fortuna is available to purchase via seelbachs.com in nearly all 50 states, and kandlwines.com for customers in California. MSRP is $84.99.

To learn more about Fortuna and its history, visit fortunabourbon.com and follow @fortunabourbon on Instagram. The brand plans to release new products in 2023 as well.

[PRESS RELEASE] Russell's Reserve® Introduces Annual "Single Rickhouse Collection" with Inaugural Release from Legendary Retired Rickhouse, Camp Nelson C

Crafted exclusively from barrels aged in a single, designated rickhouse, each small batch offering explores the impact of the aging environment, available for a limited time in select markets

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky., Aug. 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Straight out of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, award-winning and family-crafted Russell's Reserve announces the debut of an all-new, annual limited-edition collection: Russell's Reserve Single Rickhouse. Serving as a distinct expression of the location (or "rickhouse") where the liquid is aged and the "terroir" of that aging environment, each Single Rickhouse bottling will feature rare liquid from a different, individual rickhouse - past and present - at the Wild Turkey Distillery. The series explores the often unsung contributions specific resting places have on a whiskey's final character, celebrating varied nuances of whiskey aging across these different environments. In light of the recent floods in Eastern Kentucky and the heart of Bourbon Country, the Russell family gladly donated the first bottles of this special liquid to The Kentucky Bourbon Benefit - Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund this August as a way to support those impacted.

The inaugural release, Russell's Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson C, features liquid from only 72 barrels from the now dismantled, seven-story rickhouse, Camp Nelson C. Built in 1946 and decommissioned in 2021, Camp Nelson C became a treasured rickhouse of Wild Turkey Distilling Co. Situated on top of a hill and next to the Kentucky River, the warehouse was made from timber and clad with tin to naturally control internal temperatures, with space for air to circulate and allow the barrels to breathe during the aging process. Russell's Reserve Master Distiller Eddie Russell selected the barrels for this special release from the center-cut, also considered the sweet spot, on floors three and four of the warehouse.

The Single Rickhouse from Camp Nelson C serves as a testament to the Russell Family's mastery of craft bourbon and appreciation of the distinctive liquid nuances that each Single Rickhouse brings. As Eddie began tasting through barrels selected for consideration for this release, he knew immediately once he'd tasted from the Camp Nelson C center-cut barrels that he'd found a special batch. A unanimous decision by all who tasted it, including Master Distiller Jimmy Russell and Eddie's son, Bruce Russell, the final flavor profile of Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson C is an unexpectedly rich and unique take for the brand.

"Tasting through our barrel stock as our whiskies age and determining which are right for each release is one of my favorite parts of the job," said Eddie Russell, Master Distiller at the Wild Turkey distillery. "When I tasted this liquid from Camp Nelson C, I knew it deserved its own place in Russell's history. It's a little different from what folks have come to expect from our whiskies, and even though we all personally enjoy different flavor profiles, Dad, myself and my son, Bruce all agreed instantly – this is a once in a blue moon kind of whiskey and deserving of being the first release in this special series. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do."

Aged for over 10 years, this limited release of non-chill filtered bourbon was bottled at 112.4 barrel proof and is nothing short of decadent, with thick, rich introductory notes of toffee, coconut and vanilla, and a long, silky finish. Eddie Russell, with over four decades of experience under his belt, has described this whiskey as a "five-star liquid," which boasts the following characteristics:

  • Proof: 112.4
  • Aroma: Sweet vanilla, caramel and cream that transition to fresh and dried fruit and then notes of brown sugar, oak and char.
  • Taste: Thick, rich and sweet introduction with notes of toffee, coconut and vanilla that transition to notes of apple, dried fruit, toasted pecan, chocolate and baking spices.
  • Finish: Long finish with silky and sweet mouthcoating that transitions to a pleasant balance of oak, baking spices and rich sweetness

The Russell's Reserve Single Rickhouse Collection is the newest innovation to join the brand's lineup, which includes an award-winning portfolio of bourbon and rye whiskeys meant to sip and savor. Officially available on shelves in early October and just in time for the holidays, the 2022 Russell's Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson C will be available for a limited time at select U.S. retailers and at the Wild Turkey Distillery for a suggested retail price of $249.99 per 750 ML bottle. Hidden Barn Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Honors Process, Quality and Creativity

Initial release available this month in select markets

Sparta, Kentucky (July 18, 2022) – Black barns are a hallmark of the rolling hills and hollers of Kentucky. At a time when distilling was a punishable offense, the black stained barns, caused by a naturally occurring microflora that feeds on airborne alcohol, were a giveaway to anyone looking to bust up an illegal distilling operation. In a sign of solidarity and community, Kentuckians would paint all barns black to make the still barns indistinguishable from others.

In this spirit of community and fellowship, a team of four friends and founders today announce the release of Hidden Barn Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The initial release, available in stores later this month, is Hidden Barn Small Batch, composed of just seven barrels distilled by Master Distiller Royce Neeley and expertly blended by Master Blender Jackie Zykan.

Together with their partners, Nate Winegar and Matt Dankner of Colorado’s 5280 Whiskey Society, Neeley and Zykan are embracing the spirit of “doing things the hard way” with their first series release - putting process and quality above all else.

“We wanted to produce the kind of whiskey we would be proud to share, we wanted to lift the guardrails and pursue boundless creativity and unmatched quality in our process,” said Jackie Zykan, Master Blender for Hidden Barn. “Hidden Barn whiskies are full of subtlety and nuance, emphasizing quality at every turn and crafted to be shared in the celebration of good friends and good whiskey.”

Hidden Barn Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey’s first series is comprised of distillate produced at the Neeley Family Distillery. In the spirit of doing things the hard way, Master Distiller Royce Neeley touches every step of the process from grain to aging, personally hand-collecting wild Kentucky yeast, carefully monitoring a 5-day fermentation using traditional cypress fermenters, and personally distilling and hand-cutting the double pot distillation.

The Whiskey Made the Hard Way series was fermented using wild yeast and is double pot distilled. It was collected at 127 proof, and entered the barrel at 110 proof. The seven barrels represent some of the first lots to mature under the watchful eye of Neeley. To maintain the integrity and viscosity of the liquid, the bourbon is screened for sediment and sees no additional filtration.

Hidden Barn Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Batch #001 is presented at an undiluted batch proof of 53% ABV and offered at a suggested retail price of $74.99. The initial offering will be available in Kentucky, Colorado, Florida and California, with more distribution expected before the end of the year.

Jack Daniel’s Releases Small Batch Special Release Coy Hill High Proof- The highest ever released

Jack Daniel’s Small Batch Special Release Coy High Proof (image via Jack Daniel’s)

The Jack Daniel Distillery introduces the very limited Jack Daniel’s Small Batch Special Release Coy Hill High Proof in 375ml bottles available in Tennessee only. Matured in the highest reaches of barrelhouses on Coy Hill, the highest elevation at the Jack Daniel Distillery, this Tennessee Whiskey is bottled at proof points ranging from 143.6 - 155.1.

During the bottling of the 2021 Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill High Proof, around 55 barrels were found where the Angel’s Share – the whiskey lost due to evaporation – was so high the liquid inside could not be bottled as Single Barrel selections. The high level of evaporation resulted in a unique flavor and character as well as a higher proof. The barrels were instead batched together by profile to create the Jack Daniel’s Small Batch Special Release Coy High Proof, featuring five unique batches at 143.6, 147.3, 149.8, 153.2, and 155.1 proof – the highest proof whiskeys ever released from Jack Daniel’s.

“When we found these barrels in our Coy Hill barrelhouses, we immediately knew we had something special. But due to the very low yield and incredibly high proofs, we had to be creative in how we bottled these last drops,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “We batched the barrels to craft unique profiles at five proof points highlighting the characteristics of this special liquid and developed a new higher compression cork specifically designed for this expression. It’s an exciting time at Jack Daniel’s as we continue to push innovation and experimentation in our whiskey-making while showcasing everything the Jack Daniel Distillery has to offer.”

Jack Daniel’s Small Batch Special Release Coy Hill High Proof has an aroma of burnt sugar, cooked fruit and oak with notes of rich molasses and concentrated barrel spice with bold oak. It finishes long and full with layers of char, dried fruit and caramel.

Jack Daniel’s Small Batch Special Release Coy Hill High Proof has a mash bill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley and 8% rye and ranges 143.6 - 155.1 proof (71.8% - 77.55% abv). The 375ml bottles will be available in very limited quantities in Tennessee and at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the Jack Daniel Distillery beginning July 1 with a suggested retail price of $55.

Due to the high barrel strength, the bottle should remain upright at all times unless pouring into a glass to enjoy.

LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- This July Michter's will ship its first and only 2022 bottling of 10 Year Rye. Michter's Master Distiller Dan McKee commented, "Given that we're holding back our 10 Year Bourbon until 2023, I'm especially happy to be releasing our 10 Year Rye this summer. It's one of my very favorite releases."

When remarking on the 2022 release of the distiller's 10 Year Rye, Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco said, "It may be the only release we do of a 10 Year whiskey this year, but it's a really special one. At Michter's it's about never compromising on quality rather than maximizing sales." The suggested U.S. retail price per 750ml bottle of Michter's 10 Year Rye is $185.

Michter's 10 Year Rye is a single barrel product. It is a Kentucky style rye made from a fair amount of corn and barley to give balance and added complexity to the spice of its rye grain. It is the exceptional balance of sweet and spice with a subtle hint of oak maturity that makes Michter's so special to those who appreciate a Kentucky style rye." observed Michter's Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson.

Michter's has a rich and long legacy of offering traditional American whiskeys of exceptional quality. With each of its limited production offerings aged to its peak maturity, Michter's highly acclaimed portfolio includes rye, bourbon, sour mash whiskey, and American whiskey. Chattanooga Whiskey ANNOUNCES NEXT RELEASE IN AWARD-WINNING BOTTLED IN BOND VINTAGE SERIES

Bottled in Bond: Spring 2018 Vintage from Chattanooga Whiskey

CHATTANOOGA, TN (May 27, 2022)Chattanooga Whiskey today announced the next release of their Bottled in Bond Vintage Series: Spring 2018 Vintage. The series is exclusively crafted at their Riverfront Distillery and is a single-season, vintage-dated expression of their Tennessee High Malt style.

To be labeled Bottled in Bond, a bourbon must be the product of one distillation season, one distiller, and from one distillery. Legally, it must be aged in a federally bonded warehouse for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof.

“We believe this release not only lives up to the Bottled in Bond tradition, but also pushes our BIB Vintage Series in an exciting new direction,” said Tim Piersant, Founder & CEO.

Barreled January through June 2018, Chattanooga Whiskey’s Spring 2018 Vintage is crafted from a selection of four unique high malt bourbon mash bills - all made within the same distilling season - and each composed of at least 25% specialty malted grains. The result is an innovative approach to one of the industry’s most time-honored quality standards.

“Our Spring 2018 blend includes a small percentage of a new recipe to the series: R18016. Made with approximately 20% minimally dried ‘green’ malt in its mash bill, this delicate recipe added a lovely, light complexity to the blend,” said Grant McCracken, Head Distiller.

Bottled in Bond: Spring 2018 Vintage will be available at the Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery and across TN, GA, FL, TX, IL, IN, SC, LA, KY, AL, and CO at a suggested retail price of $52.99 for a 750ml bottle. Expect notes of crème brûlée, apple cobbler and toasted coconut with a long, malty-sweet finish. More information about each mash bill can be found at chattwhiskey.com/mashbills.

About Chattanooga Whiskey:
Starting in 2011, Chattanooga Whiskey challenged the laws and won the right to distill whiskey in Chattanooga for the first time in over 100 years. The Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery now hosts over 40,000 visitors per year and serves as a hub of innovation and creativity to push the boundaries of craft whiskey. [Press Release] Lux Row Distillers Introduces Ezra Brooks 99, Rebel 100 in 1.75L Bottles

Lux Row Distillers – the Bardstown, Kentucky, home of the Ezra Brooks, Rebel, Daviess County, David Nicholson and Blood Oath bourbon brands – has added two SKUs to its repertoire of offerings at retail. Beginning in June, the distillery’s Ezra Brooks 99 and Rebel 100 brands will be available in 1.75L bottles at a minimum suggested retail price of $44.99 and $35.99, respectively.

Introduced in early 2021, Ezra Brooks 99 is a pure, oak-barrel-aged Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey elevated to 99 proof. Charcoal filtered for a smooth, mellow finish, Ezra Brooks 99 features the same spicy, ryed-bourbon-mash-bill taste as the original Ezra Brooks, but with an enhanced flavor profile delivered by the higher proof. Introduced in 2019, Rebel 100 is a smooth wheated bourbon that offers the same round body and full flavor of the original Rebel Bourbon but takes it a step further by dialing up the proof to 100.

The level of sales success enjoyed by both Ezra Brooks 99 and Rebel 100 is a key factor in the decision made at Lux Row Distillers to expand these brand offerings by including both variants in 1.75L bottles.

“Since their respective launches in 2019 and 2021, Rebel 100 and Ezra Brooks 99 have been very popular with our customers,” said Eric Winter, whiskey brand manager for Lux Row Distillers. “Our decision to include both brands in 1.75L bottles is a reflection of their continued popularity, as well as our ongoing effort to give our customers what they are looking for.”

According to research provided by Mintel (source: Lightspeed/Mintel – US Dark Spirits Report, Nov. 2020), consumers are seeking spirits they consider “premium,” as defined by a combination of superior taste, heritage, price and awards won, among other factors. This research is supported by recent Nielsen market data (source: Nielsen 52 wks 9L cases, week ending 1-1-2022), which indicates consumer movement away from value brands and toward more premium offerings.

“Over the years Luxco has innovated within the whiskey category to keep up with the demands of the changing consumer by introducing more unique premium offerings,” said Luxco VP of Marketing Fletcher Buchman. “Over the past five to seven years, the demand for – and growth of – the premium and super-premium bourbon categories continue to grow, and we are prepared to grow along with it.”

[Press Release] MURLARKEY'S ALCHEMY CONTINUES - FIRST STRAIGHT BOURBON RELEASE TAKES DOUBLE GOLD AT NYISC, WHILE SALSA BORRACHA WHISKEY TAKES GOLD AT ADI

BRISTOW, Va., June 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- MurLarkey® Distilled Spirits is excited to announce that its first bourbon release, MurLarkey Birthright™ Straight Bourbon Whiskey, has won the Double Gold medal at the 13th Annual New York International Spirits Competition.

The NYISC is recognized as one of the most respected and influential international spirits competitions in the industry. This year, over 1400 spirits from around the world competed in a blind tasting judged by top spirits buyers. Birthright received a 96 rating and Double Gold honors, a unanimous decision by the NYISC panelists.

"It's been an amazing year and I'm incredibly proud of our team and give special thanks to Head Distiller Kevin Szady and Master Distiller George "Papi" Zwetkow," said Tom Murray, MurLarkey CEO. "First Salsa takes Gold and Best of Category at ADI, and now Birthright takes Double Gold at NYISC no less. Both amazing accomplishments, and to do it with two radically different spirits is a true testament to the skilled magic of MurLarkey."

Earlier this year, MurLarkey Papi's Salsa Borracha Whiskey earned a Gold Medal in the American Distilling Institute's 2022 International Spirits Competition. The judges noted the whiskey's "incredible flavor construction" and how the corn whiskey spirit "tastes so much like actual salsa."

"From our first sips, we all loved the profile of Papi's Salsa Borracha Whiskey," said Jim Larkin, MurLarkey COO. "It is a spirit like no other. We are honored to be awarded Gold and Best of Category by the ADI judges for this truly unique and delicious spirit."

MurLarkey has now won at least Gold in international competition in five categories: Vodka (Divine Clarity Vodka), Gin (Imagination Gin), Aged Whiskey (Smokehouse Whiskey), Flavored Whiskey (Papi's Salsa Borracha Whiskey), and Bourbon (Birthright™ Straight Bourbon Whiskey), an achievement to our knowledge no other craft distillery can claim.

[PRESS RELEASE] Basil Hayden Announces One-time Release: Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke

DISCOVER A SOFTER SIDE TO SMOKY SPIRITS WITH LATEST RELEASE FROM BASIL HAYDEN® - SUBTLE SMOKE

An innovative, one-time release with notes of soft char and light butterscotch

CLERMONT, KY, March 31, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Basil Hayden challenges the notion that smoky spirits are harsh with its newest ultra-premium bourbon and limited time offering, Basil Hayden® Subtle Smoke. Artfully complex, yet uniquely approachable, Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke is an entirely new take on smoky spirits that will capture the attention of the whiskey connoisseurs and those new to the category.

Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke
Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke is crafted differently from most other smoky spirits. The steps to create this unique bourbon begin with toasting and lightly charring a secondary barrel. Afterwards, hickory-smoked chips are delicately ignited at a constant feed to produce smoke, which is then pumped into the barrel, resulting in soft, charred notes. This six-month secondary aging process provides a smoother, more subtle take on smoky spirits, and creates the perfectly sophisticated, yet approachable introduction to both bourbon and Basil Hayden.

"We continue to honor my grandfather Booker Noe's legacy of pushing the boundaries of what bourbon can be with the debut of Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke," said eighth generation Beam family distiller, Freddie Noe. "A showcase of the many ways in which our bourbon can be layered, refined and complex, yet approachable and inviting, Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke is re-imagining how smoky spirits can taste."

On the nose, aromas of mellow smoke character with a hint of vanilla preface flavors of soft char with light sweetness reminiscent of butterscotch and maple on the palette. Concluding with a crisp, yet delicate finish of smokiness with light toasted hickory wood, the new expression offers a subtle, welcoming introduction to a smoky spirit while paying homage to the bourbon's signature high-rye style.

"Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke is proof that bourbon can be complex and smoky, but doesn't need to be harsh," said Jonathan Marks, Senior Brand Director for Global Small Batch Bourbon at Beam Suntory. "We look forward to bringing new members into the Basil Hayden family with this bourbon that provides a subtle invitation to smoky spirits in a way that only Basil Hayden can."

Perfect for gifting spirits connoisseurs or wow-ing friends at a dinner party, Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke is available now, for a limited time, at premium spirits retailers across the United States and with a suggested retail price of $49.99/750mL. Ideally served neat or on the rocks, Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke encourages those new and familiar with the category to discover all that bourbon can be through the subtle, unexpected infusion of smoke.

About Basil Hayden®
Crafted in 1992 by Booker Noe as part of the Small Batch collection, Basil Hayden introduced a more subtle side of bourbon compared to its counterparts. Inspired by bourbons with high-rye mash bills, Booker set out to create a bourbon that would offer an approachable taste profile and defy preconceived bourbon perceptions.  Basil Hayden Bourbon welcomes new drinkers into whiskey and showcases new occasions to drink it. Beyond its flagship Basil Hayden Bourbon, the brand has pushed the boundaries of innovation in recent years. These intriguing offerings have included expressions such as Basil Hayden Toast, Dark Rye, 10-Year, and the new, limited time release of Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke.
