Mead Day – August 3, 2024: A Toast to History and Craft

The Skeptic Meadery

Mead Day is August 3, 2024, celebrating one of the world’s oldest alcoholic beverages. Originating around 7000 B.C. in Northern China and mentioned in ancient texts like the Rigveda, mead has a storied history as a revered nectar. Modern mead-making involves a meticulous process of fermentation, yielding a diverse range of flavors from sweet to dry. This year, join the festivities by sampling different meads, trying your hand at home brewing, hosting a mead-themed feast, or supporting local meaderies. Mead Day not only honors ancient traditions but also highlights the craft and creativity of mead-makers today. I encourage you to visit 1634 Meadery in Maine, Schramm’s Meadery and B.Nektar in Michigan, The Skeptic MeaderyEagle's Claw Meadery and Honeytree Meadery in middle Tennessee, Four Brothers Mead and Burnt Barrel Meadery in Missouri, Superstition MeaderyDrinking Horn Meadery and Scale and Feather Meadery in Arizona or Honeygirl Meadery in North Carolina. These are a few of my favorite meaderies and if you do stop by one on Mead Day, tell them Walker (that’s me) sent you. It won’t get you anything special but it might be entertaining to see the look on their faces as they ask themselves, “Who the hell is Walker?” So see what all the buzz is about on August 3rd (and any other day). Cheers to this time-honored beverage and its enduring charm!

Nebraska Governor Proposes Steep Increase in Spirits Tax

Nebraska rocket scientist Governor Jim Pillen has proposed a property tax plan that includes a dramatic increase in the excise tax rate for distilled spirits, from $3.75 to $14.50 per gallon—a 287% hike. This change would give Nebraska the second-highest spirits tax rate in the U.S. According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS), this could result in a $110 million decline in alcohol sales and the loss of around 1,350 jobs. The plan aims to generate additional revenue for property tax relief by also increasing taxes on other "sin" items like cigarettes and vaping products. However, DISCUS argues that this tax hike will negatively impact consumers and businesses, including local farmers and the hospitality industry, urging legislators to reject the proposal.

Reverence Bourbon: A Tribute to Resilience and Tennessee Craftsmanship

Reverence Bourbon stands out as a unique Tennessee bourbon crafted from a meticulous blend of two differently aged barrels, ensuring a rich and incomparable flavor profile. Founder Michael Frazier's personal journey, inspired by the challenges his family faced post-9/11, infuses the brand with a deep sense of resilience and purpose. This bourbon, aged in new charred oak barrels for each batch, boasts a precise corn-to-rye ratio complemented by a touch of barley, resulting in the premium oak flavor cherished by bourbon enthusiasts. Its tasting notes, ranging from caramel and maple on the nose to chocolate and oak on the palate, culminate in a smooth finish with hints of fresh spearmint. With a mash bill comprising 77% corn, 13% rye, and 10% barley, Reverence embodies the spirit of Tennessee craftsmanship and perseverance. Established in Nashville in June 2020, Reverence Bourbon exemplifies a celebration of life's successes and the enduring spirit of the Volunteer State. As I have yet to sample this release which is Batch 3, I asked a friend and former coworker for a quick review.
"This particular batch was the third batch that hasn’t been released to the public just yet. Now, this review is based on my [palate]." said Mr. Oliver. "You may have a different taste for your bourbon. However, for me, this bourbon is a higher proof at 94, without the sting of more traditional ryes. It’s best with a few rocks to open up the quality of the drink. I could taste the barrel it was aged in by the charred taste, but it wasn’t bad because it perfectly complemented the hint of cherry sweetness and surprisingly a slight hint of banana. It’s a good drink for slow sipping, otherwise you’ll be drunk on accident. Overall it has its own flavor and distinguished taste that makes it unique from any other bourbon ... but tastes good without the alcohol being overpowering."
With that said, I can't wait to try Reverence. Earlier releases are currently available at various liquor stores across Tennessee. Looking for more information? Check out the Reverence website at https://reverenceenterprises.com/.

Bernheim Barrel Proof Wheat Whiskey: A Worthwhile Addition to Heaven Hill's Lineup

Heaven Hill's barrel-proof whiskey lineup has gained popularity among whiskey enthusiasts, with additions like Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey offering unique options for aficionados. Bernheim's barrel-proof version, released twice a year, provides a robust yet flavorful experience with its mashbill of 51 percent wheat, 37 percent corn, and 12 percent malted barley. The latest batch, A224, boasts a cask strength of 125.2 proof, delivering notes of orange chocolate, green apple, cinnamon, vanilla custard, and black pepper. Despite its high proof, this whiskey remains approachable, particularly when enjoyed over ice. While some American wheat whiskeys opt for a 100 percent wheat mashbill, Bernheim's inclusion of corn lends it a flavor profile closer to bourbon, making it an appealing choice for wheated bourbon fans or those seeking a milder barrel-proof experience. Whether you're on the Pappy hunt or simply appreciate quality wheat whiskey, Bernheim Barrel Proof is a bottle worth seeking out.

Funktastic Meads Expands into Beer Brewing with Funktastic Beer

Midlothian-based mead maker Funktastic Meads is branching out into the beer business with its new offshoot, Funktastic Beer. Recently receiving approval from the Virginia ABC, Funktastic Beer will serve beer brewed by outside contract brewers. Owned by Matt and Heather Carroll, Funktastic Meads specializes in traditional meads as well as meads with unique ingredients like Swedish Fish and Carolina Reaper peppers. The decision to enter the beer market arose when Matt Carroll considered a corporate job opportunity, ultimately choosing to focus on expanding Funktastic instead. Contract brewing agreements have been secured with breweries like The Answer Brewpub and Funguys Brewing, allowing for smaller, limited runs of beers and saving space in Funktastic's storefront. The addition of beer aims to attract customers familiar with beer, introducing them to Funktastic's unique meads. Funktastic Beer plans to debut in early April with a range of styles, including Japanese lager, pastry stout, and fruited sour, with future plans to add IPAs, a red lager, and hard seltzer.
