Tony Fry, a small-town Arkansas native who works in information technology, is changing the state's reputation by founding the first meadery there. Fry, who is also a homebrewing enthusiast, opened Arkansas Meadery in a barn on his Saline County acreage in 2021. Today, he distributes mead to five Arkansas liquor stores around the state, with more to come. Despite its historical roots, mead is relatively unknown to modern audiences, especially in the US. However, there are about 500 commercial meaderies in the United States, an increase of 650% since 2003. Fry is part of the state's movement to revive the beverage's popularity. What You Should Know About Mead, The World’s Oldest Alcoholic Beverage

Mead is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with the addition of fruits, spices, or grains. It has a long and storied history, with evidence of mead making dating back to ancient times in various cultures around the world.

One of the reasons for mead's recent surge in popularity is the growth of the craft beverage industry. Mead makers, like craft brewers, are experimenting with new ingredients and techniques, creating a wide range of styles and flavors to appeal to different tastes.

Mead is also appealing to those who are looking for a gluten-free alternative to beer or cider, as it is made from honey and does not contain grains.

In terms of taste, mead can range from dry and crisp to sweet and dessert-like, depending on the ingredients used and the fermentation process. It can also have a complex and nuanced flavor profile, with notes of honey, fruit, and spices.

Overall, mead is a unique and delicious beverage that is worth trying if you haven't already. With the growing popularity of craft mead makers, you may be able to find a local meadery and try some for yourself. For the full article, click here.

Passports can be picked up and stamped at any participating location, with every visit earning participants a stamp. The more stamps you receive, the bigger the prize. Last year, an estimated $42,000 in additional beverage sales were made from the passport, and five winners of Made in Nevada's gift basket emerged at the end of 2022. This program aims to highlight craft beverage establishments across Nevada and support local businesses while offering fun incentives for passport holders. Failure to provide this tax break may impact the flow of bourbon jobs and infrastructure throughout the state. For the full article, click here.

Pinhook Has Announced The Launch Of The Vertical Series Rye 7 Year

The Pinhook Vertical Series Rye 7 Year is a carefully crafted spirit that has been aged for seven years to achieve its distinct flavor profile. It's interesting that the only factor affecting the aroma and flavor of the spirit is the aging process, given that the mash bill, barrels, and fill dates are all the same across the releases. The blend of 28 barrels and the high proof of 105.12 certainly make it a unique and potentially bold choice for whiskey enthusiasts. The aromas of “caramel, orange zest, cedar, and clove,” followed by flavors of “chocolate, root beer, cardamom, and tobacco” sound like a complex and intriguing combination. It will be exciting to see how this latest release is received by whiskey aficionados. For more information, visit www.pinhookbourbon.com/products.

And there you have it, our roundup of the latest happenings in the bourbon and whiskey world. From exciting new releases to expansions and innovations, the industry continues to grow and evolve. First Distillery In Surf City, NC

Andy and Amy Szwejbka are set to open Hidden Ships, Pender County's first distillery, in Triton Village in Surf City in September 2023. The distillery will produce gin, white rum, and vodka, while tequila and bourbon will be sourced initially. However, the distillery will lay down its first barrel of bourbon as soon as the permit is approved, which will take years before the first batch comes to market. Hidden Ships will have a production facility, a tasting room, and a bar, and will be focused on pre-Prohibition cocktails. The distillery's gin will have a juniper flavor with a botanical recipe that includes other flavors such as dogwood flower for Carolina flair. The 2,700-square-foot distillery will have a 20-foot bar as its centerpiece, with a speakeasy lounge area and indoor and outdoor seating for up to 70 people. The couple started a Kickstarter campaign with a $25,000 goal to fund the purchase of a chiller that could double Hidden Ships' production capacity, which will not stop the distillery from opening if the goal is not met. You can find more information HERE.

Toast Women's History Month With 18 Woman-Owned Spirits Brands

Distilling has traditionally been a male-dominated profession, discouraging women from participating. Bessie Williamson was the first known woman to own and run a distillery in 1944. Today, there are numerous woman-owned spirits brands. While the profession still has a significant disparity, the industry is gradually moving towards equity. This Women's History Month, here are some woman-owned spirits brands to celebrate the progress women have made and continue to make in the spirits industry.
