Welcome to Bourbon Barrel Blurbs! After another bout of my body and mind betraying me, I am happy to be back. Here, we explore the fascinating world of bourbon, whiskey, and other spirits. First Distillery In Surf City, NC

Andy and Amy Szwejbka are set to open Hidden Ships, Pender County's first distillery, in Triton Village in Surf City in September 2023. The distillery will produce gin, white rum, and vodka, while tequila and bourbon will be sourced initially. However, the distillery will lay down its first barrel of bourbon as soon as the permit is approved, which will take years before the first batch comes to market. Hidden Ships will have a production facility, a tasting room, and a bar, and will be focused on pre-Prohibition cocktails. The distillery's gin will have a juniper flavor with a botanical recipe that includes other flavors such as dogwood flower for Carolina flair. The 2,700-square-foot distillery will have a 20-foot bar as its centerpiece, with a speakeasy lounge area and indoor and outdoor seating for up to 70 people. The couple started a Kickstarter campaign with a $25,000 goal to fund the purchase of a chiller that could double Hidden Ships' production capacity, which will not stop the distillery from opening if the goal is not met. 5 New Bourbon Brands You Need to Know

Bourbon continues to be a popular spirit among whiskey enthusiasts, and new brands are constantly appearing in the market. Here are five new bourbon brands to try, all of which source their whiskey from reputable distilleries, but each with their unique features. Hand Barrel bourbon, distilled by Bardstown Bourbon Company, has a high-rye mashbill and comes in black and white bottles. High N’ Wicked Kentucky Straight Bourbon is produced using the sweet mash method, has a high rye content, and is aged for at least five years. Puncher’s Chance Bourbon is a limited-edition release made from a blend of five- to six-year-old bourbon and is finished in a rum cask. Frank August’s line includes a high-rye bourbon, a single-barrel bourbon, and a bourbon finished with toasted Japanese mizunara oak staves. Perpetual Whiskey Project has launched its premier New York Single Malt Whiskey after years of patience and dedication. The whiskey is a blend of straight whiskey that has been aged in ex-bourbon, sherry, and new American oak barrels, and features fruity esters, toffee notes, and a subtle touch of peat smokiness. Perpetual Whiskey Project used unique distillation methods, including an Italian column still, to create their single malt, which boasts a complexity and depth of flavor that rivals Scotch. Bluebird Distilling And Country Musician Jordan Davis Release Limited Edition Whiskey

A Chester County, Pennsylvania distillery, Bluebird Distilling, is expanding its distribution to 41 states following the success of its limited edition Bluebird Days Straight American Whiskey, created in partnership with country musician Jordan Davis. Founder Jared Adkins expects the move to increase sales by up to 20% and plans to add more products as national sales grow. The distillery, which already sells 14 products in over 250 stores across Pennsylvania, also plans to launch an e-commerce site for the coffee products from Char & Stave, its sister cafe and cocktail bar concept. Eric LeGrand Creates New Bourbon Brand To Help Support Those Who Are Paralyzed

Eric LeGrand, former Rutgers University football player, author, sports analyst, business owner, and advocate for those with paralysis, has launched Eric LeGrand Kentucky Straight Bourbon. The 750-milliliter bottles, priced at $45, will be distributed by Allied Beverage Group to New Jersey liquor stores and will also be available on ericlegrandwhiskey.com. LeGrand, who sustained a spinal cord injury in 2010, has fought against his own prognosis to regain movement in his shoulders. He co-founded the whiskey with Brian Axelrod and vowed to donate $5.20 of every bourbon case sold to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. LeGrand and his team have donated close to $2m to the foundation, which works to advance research on finding the cure for spinal cord injuries and improving quality of life for individuals and families. Eric LeGrand Bourbon is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon, distilled and bottled in Kentucky, created with corn, limestone purified water, fresh rye, and barley. Jim Beam® Launches Ready-To-Drink Cocktails Just In Time For Spring

Jim Beam, in partnership with The Boston Beer Company, has launched Jim Beam Kentucky Coolers, a range of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails in four flavors: Strawberry Punch, Black Cherry Lemonade, Sweet Tea Lemonade, and Citrus Punch. The Kentucky Coolers aims to provide consumers with full-flavored RTD beverages with a lighter profile and a smooth finish. With only 120 calories per serving, the Kentucky Coolers can be served chilled and shared with others. Heather Boyd, Beam Suntory Managing Director of RTDs, North America, said that the company aims to offer consumers the perfect occasion to bring people together, and with the Kentucky Coolers, it hopes to bring the powerful connecting force of cracking open a crisp and cool beverage with friends to all. Distilling has traditionally been a male-dominated profession, discouraging women from participating. Bessie Williamson was the first known woman to own and run a distillery in 1944. However, women like Lorena Vasquez, Joy Spence, and Jassil Villanueva Quintana have helped push the industry into the 21st century, resulting in more women working at distilleries, opening their own, and starting their brands. Today, there are numerous woman-owned spirits brands. While the profession still has a significant disparity, the industry is gradually moving towards equity. Woodford Reserve And Kentucky Derby Museum Are Dropping An Ultra-Limited Bourbon

It seems that the Kentucky Derby season is in full swing, with special bourbon releases coming out leading up to the main event on May 6. The latest is two batches of special Woodford Reserve bourbon, which is available exclusively from the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Secretariat Bourbon Box Set was released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Secretariat winning the Triple Crown. There are only 400 box sets available, and while they will go on sale to the public in the coming weeks, there’s still time to enter the lottery to win a chance to purchase one of two box sets, each numbered #73 to celebrate Secretariat’s victory year. Uncle Nearest Takes Top Honors At 2023 Los Angeles Invitational Wine & Spirits Challenge

The Los Angeles Invitational Wine & Spirits Challenge is an annual competition that aims to highlight the best wine and spirits producers in the world and introduce those producers to the largest market of consumers in the United States. The judging for the competition took place on February 21-22, 2023, and attracted close to 1,100 entries.

The Best of the Best winners were a Pinot Noir from Russian River Vineyards (Sonoma County, Calif.) and a Rye Whiskey from Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey (Shelbyville, Tenn.). The Russian River Vineyards’ 2018 Austin Vineyard Pinot Noir was described as "Age worthy," "complex," "very round with great acidity," "full-bodied" and "savory" and earned 99 points and a Double Gold rating. The Uncle Nearest Uncut and Unfiltered Straight Rye Whiskey was described as having "leathery," "earthy," and "Moose Lodge-class old-style rye" characteristics, and was awarded Best of the Best honors in the spirits sweepstakes entries. New York’s Cooper's Daughter Spirits Blending Old Techniques, New Flavors

Cooper's Daughter Spirits is a distillery and cooperage in Claverack, New York. It was founded in 2015 by Stuart and Sophie Newsome and produces a wide range of spirits, including bourbon, whiskey, vodka, and liqueurs. The distillery's buildings are located on a 1.5-acre property, which came with a restored farmhouse and two other buildings. One of the buildings was renovated by Stuart to serve as a distillery and cooperage, while the other building, built in 1790, was refurbished and is now used as a rickhouse for aging bourbon and an indoor café. The property was originally part of the Jacob Rutsen Van Rensselaer House and Mill complex, and the current owners also own a 50-year-old apple orchard in Red Hook. Cooper's Daughter plans to use its own apples to make vodka in the coming years. The grains, fruits, botanicals, and tree syrups used to flavor their seasonal spirits are either grown on their own property or procured from nearby farms. The Cocktail Garden is an outdoor space where people can enjoy a drink and has several outdoor spaces, including a wood-framed tent and a blazing steel fire pit. Whiskey Boom In Wilmington, NC?

Wilmington's distillery scene is still young, with End of Days Distillery celebrating its third anniversary and Blue Shark Vodka gradually expanding since selling its first bottle in 2019. With new distilleries opening last year, there is still a lot of room to grow, and more spirit-makers are adding bourbons and whiskeys to their offerings. For example, Wilmington Distillery's Regulator is a blend of mostly bourbon with a small percentage of whiskey, while Momentum Distillery recently introduced its Rye Whiskey, which is aged with Brazilian hardwood on-site. Additionally, the Bloomquist family behind Blue Shark Vodka is aging a limited bourbon release for six years and plans to introduce an aged rum from Barbados in 2024. Four Colorado Distillers Won Big At 'the Whiskey Magazine Awards – America 2023'

Four Colorado distilleries took home awards at 'The Whiskey Magazine Awards – America 2023' ceremony held at the Brown Hotel in Louisville. Storm King Distilling Company won 'Best American Whiskey' for their Side Gig expression, while Breckenridge Distillery won three awards in the blended whiskey categories. Distillery 291 won in the 'Best American New Make & Young Spirit' category, Hogback Distillery won 'Best American Single Cask Single Malt,' and Taluka Distillery won 'Best American Pot Still.' Oak & Eden Launches A New Whiskey Customizer

Oak & Eden, a whiskey brand based in Southlake, Texas, has launched a new Whiskey Customizer that allows customers to personalize their bottles of whiskey. The customization process involves selecting a base from rye, bourbon, wheated bourbon, or four-grain bourbon at either 90 proof or 114 proof, and then choosing from American oak or French oak spires that have been soaked in 11 different infusions, including vanilla, port wine, coffee, cabernet, and orange liqueur. The Hidden Black History Behind How Whiskey Was Created

Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey, two classic American spirits, have roots in Black history, with evidence showing that Black hands took on much of the work in their production. Nathan “Uncle Nearest” Green, a Black man, was the master distiller who taught Jack Daniel how to make Tennessee whiskey. Although he was not able to start his own distillery, he is recognized as the first master distiller of Jack Daniel's, and his influence is acknowledged in other brands, including Fawn Weaver's Uncle Nearest whiskey brand. American Whiskey From 170-Year-Old Shipwreck Could Be Worth Millions

In 1854, a ship called The Westmoreland sank in Lake Michigan, carrying 280 barrels of whiskey. In 2010, the wreckage was discovered by a diver, who found the whiskey still preserved in the cold, calm waters. Black Button Distilling + Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra = Limited Sonic-Aged Bourbon

Black Button Distilling and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra have collaborated to release a limited edition bourbon that has been sonic-aged by playing a piece of music directly to the aging barrel. The pulsating sound waves agitate the bourbon, resulting in a more vibrant and flavorful whiskey. The piece of music chosen for this collaboration was the RPO's performance of Beethoven's Egmont Overture, which was played for six straight months. Only 100 bottles of this limited edition Sonic Aged Bourbon are available for purchase at Black Button Distilling's location in Rochester. Old Forester Is Letting You Sleep In "The Sleepeasy"

Old Forester's new initiative, "The Sleepeasy," offers an immersive experience for whiskey lovers. The one-bedroom apartment located on Whiskey Row in Louisville features vintage memorabilia from the brand's archives, a full kitchen, a queen-sized bed, and more. Guests who book the three-night experience will receive a personalized meet-and-greet with Master Taster Melissa Rift, lessons on crafting cocktails, a tour and tasting at Old Forester Distillery, and the chance to purchase limited-edition Old Forester whiskies, including the new 117 Series Warehouse H bourbon. The best part is that all proceeds from "The Sleepeasy" will go to the Center for Women and Families, a Louisville-based non-profit that helps women and families in crisis. Robb Report’s Review of Pinhook Collaboration Series #2

Pinhook Collaboration Series #2

This is a great write-up on the Pinhook Collaboration Series, especially the latest release made in collaboration with Garrett Oliver, the brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewery. The collaboration between the whiskey maker, Sean Josephs, and Oliver, who has extensive experience in beer and spirits, has resulted in a high-quality bourbon with a rich, complex flavor profile. Despite being distilled and aged for only four years, this high-rye bourbon has a palate that belies its young age, with notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla custard, and apple tart leading off on the palate.

It is also great to see that the proceeds from the sales of this bottle will be donated to The Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling, an organization founded by Oliver to award scholarships to people of color who want to pursue brewing and distilling education. This not only helps support a good cause but also acknowledges the difficulties that people of color face in entering the craft brewing industry.

Overall, this Pinhook bourbon is a truly pleasurable high-proof drinking experience that is worth trying and sharing with friends.

BH James Distillery Open

Shawn McCormick has created a distillery, BH James, that is rooted in his family's history and heritage. Named after his great-grandfather Burton James and great-grandmother James Lake, his vodka and bourbon spirits are a tribute to his hometown of Adairville, Kentucky. McCormick's background in food science and his inspiration from the Bourbon Trail motivated him to start his own distillery, and it is now a reality on Gallatin road. Although the still is not yet open for tastings and tours, visitors can still swing by Thursday through Saturday to purchase a bottle or two. Local Distillery Closing Its Doors… For Good?

It's always sad to see a business close, but the owner of JK Williams Distillery in Peoria is determined to keep the business going, whether that means relocating or finding a new location in central Illinois. With awards for their products, there's no doubt that the distillery has a following and the potential to succeed in the future. Hopefully, they will be able to find a new location that meets their requirements and continue to produce high-quality spirits.

Meet The Queen Bee Of Catskills Spirits

Claire Marin, owner and head distiller of Pollinator Spirits, formerly known as Catskill Provisions, is a woman who is making waves in the male-dominated craft distilling industry. Marin started her journey as a beekeeper in 2003 and soon became enamored with the magical world of bees. She quit her full-time job to pursue beekeeping, eventually launching Catskills Provisions in 2010 to sell honey to chefs in New York City. As the farm distilling movement grew around her, Marin became interested in the art of distilling and eventually opened her own distillery in 2013, launching a line of spirits sourced from local farms in the Catskills and Finger Lakes regions.

Pollinator Spirits offers a range of spirits, including a rye whiskey, finished in honey barrels, two gins, a vodka, a maple bourbon, and a Crimson Amaro. The vodka is described as “expressive” due to the honey used in the fermentation process, while the Beespoke Gin is distilled using wines from the Finger Lakes, giving it a floral kick.

Marin is one of only a few female distillers in the country and is now ready to expand beyond New York, beginning national distribution directly to consumers in March. The rebranding to Pollinator Spirits is not only linked to this expansion but is also meant to bring attention to the importance of pollinators, an issue close to Marin’s heart, as she still has between 175 and 200 hives and is always supporting bees. Virginia ABC Announce Online Lotteries For Pappy

Due to its popularity and limited supply, Pappy Van Winkle can be difficult to find, which is why the Virginia ABC is holding lotteries to give Virginia residents a better chance of purchasing a bottle. The online lottery entry forms will be available for five days, and winners will be selected at random. To claim their prize, the winner must be a Virginia resident over the age of 21 and must present a valid Virginia photo identification that matches the name and address on the winner's entry at the time of purchase. Barrell Bourbon Batch 034 Released By Barrell Craft Spirits

Barrell Craft Spirits is known for its blending expertise and for creating unique, aged, cask-strength sourced whiskey and rum. Barrell Bourbon Batch 034 is a blend of whiskey aged for 6, 8, 10, and 15 years. The flavor profile of this bourbon is robust and sophisticated, with distinct tasting notes.

On the nose, it has notes of eggnog and madeleines, dry hard cider, and a range of florals such as elderflower and violet. As it sits, the fruit transitions to a more cooked character, displaying dried apricot, candied orange peel, and mulled cider.

The palate begins with blackcurrant jam and grape soda, followed by classic notes of cinnamon donut, warm cola, orange, umami, and salt. The finish is long and sustained by modest tannin, with notes of shiso, licorice root, and a fudgy peanut butter cup.

A splash of spring water reveals an initially perfumed character with notes of petrichor, jasmine tea, and apple cider vinegar, but when it settles, a deep rancio character comes out, with notes of leafy and nutty flavors.

Unicorns In Pennsylvania?

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has scheduled three limited-release lotteries that will allow those who register the chance to purchase from a total of 814 bottles of rare whiskeys and bourbons. Old Line Spirits Double Oak Series Sherry Cask

It seems that the demand for Old Line Spirits' annual release has increased significantly since winning an award in Fred Minnick's Ascot Awards last year. The product is a single malt made from 100% malted barley, aged for five years in new American white oak, and then aged for another year in sherry casks. It is bottled at 100 proof and has classic notes of caramel, brown sugar, and tobacco, with additional complexities of stone fruit, nuts, and raisins, according to co-founder Arch Watkins.

Alpha Brewing Co. to Add Distillery

Alpha Brewing Co., based in St. Louis, has announced that it will open a distillery in 2023. The company has been brewing beer since 2013 and currently sells its sour and barrel-aged beers in over 200 locations in St. Louis and nationally.

According to owner and lead brewer Derrick Langeneckert, the Brewstillery will feature a 2,300-square-foot tasting room, a 1,200-square-foot distilling space, and a small kitchen that will serve St. Louis-style pizza and snacks. The distillery will produce three brown spirits (whiskeys, ryes, or bourbons), as well as a new line of fruited vodkas called Squoosch.

Tattersall Distilling Launches Interstate American Single Malt Whiskey

Tattersall Distilling has launched its first American single malt whiskey, Interstate Whiskey, which has been aged for four years in virgin oak barrels and distilled from a blend of 100% malted barley, including Wisconsin cherry wood smoked and dark roasted malts. The result is a complex whiskey with rich notes of chocolate, cherry and a hint of coffee. It is available for purchase in Minnesota and Wisconsin at an MSRP of $45 for a 750ml bottle. Raise a Glass of Horse Soldier Bourbon

Nice little article from Horse Canada that discusses a group of former Green Berets who developed a brand of bourbon inspired by their time fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. The soldiers became known as the Horse Soldiers because of their use of Afghan horses to navigate the mountainous terrain. After returning home, the soldiers toured distilleries in Kentucky, Ireland, and Scotland to learn about whiskey making, and eventually developed their own brand of bourbon, Horse Soldier Bourbon. The brand is made in Kentucky but has its headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida, where there is a tasting room, restaurant, and event facility called Urban Stillhouse. The World Whiskies Awards received over 1,300 submissions from across the US, and the awards were judged by over 200 judges.
